The Teachers Aiming for Rewarding Goals and Effective Techniques (TARGET) Program is designed to support teachers, including guidance counselors, as they transition into Suffolk Public Schools. TARGET is mandatory for instructional staff in the following groups:
- Teachers who are new to the teaching profession
- Teachers who are new to Suffolk Public School
- Teachers who are recommended by administrators
TARGET Year 1 Program
TARGET Year 1 (Y1) program offers a series of professional development sessions scheduled from September to April and will be held at King’s Fork Middle School. Teacher participation requirements vary based on number of years of experience they have successfully completed prior to joining Suffolk Public Schools. Absences must be approved by the school administrator and reported to the Office of Professional Development PRIOR to the session day when possible. Participants who are absent from a session must complete a make-up assignment regardless of the reason for the absence. STAR and renewal points will be awarded at one (1) point for each 60 minute session. Session times are staggered based on teacher hours by level as follows:
Middle School Session Time
2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.
High School Session Time
3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
Elementary (A & B) School Session Time
4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Additionally, every teacher new to Suffolk Public Schools will be assigned a colleague to act as their mentor for the school year. Mentors will meet with teachers periodically to share information and assist new teachers as needed. Mentors are held accountable for the time they spend with their mentees and monthly documentation is required from mentor/mentee meetings.
TARGET Year 2 Program
Next school year, teachers with 1 or 2 years of experience will participate in TARGET Year 2. During the second year of the program, teachers receive a Coaching Mentor (CM) to continue to support their development as a teacher.
