The Tidewater Regional Governor’s School for Science and Technology
Identified gifted students currently in grades three, four, five, and six from Isle of Wight County, Franklin Public Schools, Suffolk Public Schools, and Southampton Public Schools are eligible and are urged to apply to The Tidewater Regional Governor’s School for Science and Technology. The program is sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education and the participating school divisions.
Session Theme: Forensics: Capturing STEM Imaginations!
Objective: Students, using forensic technologies and techniques, will conduct investigations and participate in mock trials based on collected and analyzed evidence.
The Tidewater Regional Governor’s School program will offer students the opportunity to solve real-world problems related to STEM topics and methodologies by exploring the world of forensics, using scientific tests or techniques used in connection with the detection of crime. Working in cross-age groups, students will research relevant topics relating to crime scene investigation, evidence collection, and related legal proceedings, culminating in a mock trial scenario that will evaluate their gained knowledge and experience. At least one class day will be devoted to off-site field trip(s) that will provide students with vital, novel experiences that support the session theme. Depending on the scope of students’ chosen role in the final project, a variety of technology options will be made available to students to accomplish necessary tasks. Activities that support the session theme will be planned and carried out by TRGS teachers. Students will present their technology experience, through any means reasonable, during the concluding day of the program to visiting families, district guests, and the public. Instructors who have experience working with gifted students and STEM education will act as facilitators of learning. In addition, expert speakers will provide participants relevant information and resources that will enhance the overall learning experience.
