Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS, http://vasts.spacegrant.org/ ) is a flagship program for students in Virginia.
Offered at no cost to high school juniors, the VASTS online course consists of eight modules and a final project to be completed from December 2015 through April 2016 under the guidance of licensed master educators. Based on success in the online coursework, students may be selected to attend a one-week residential Summer Academy at NASA Langley Research Center where they will interact with NASA scientists, engineers and technologists to design a human mission to Mars. Students who successfully participate in VASTS can choose to earn 2 college credits for the online course and 2 additional credits for the Summer Academy. Nearly 3,000 students have participated in this program since 2008, and we’re aiming to have 500-600 more students begin the course this year.
VASTS is a partnership between the Virginia Space Grant Consortium, NASA Langley Research Center, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the Aerospace and general STEM industry. VASTS is part of NASA’s National High School Aerospace Scholars (NHAS) program based at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
Information is available on the website for program information and an online application, http://vasts.spacegrant.org for VASTS. The deadline for applications is Sunday, November 8, 2015 at 11:59PM.
