Clubs Descriptions

  • C.H.R.O.M.E Club

    CHROME (Cooperating Hampton Roads Organization for Minorities in Engineering) provides opportunities for students to increase their awareness in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The main criteria for selecting students to participate in the program are that students: *Be Native American, Black, Hispanic, underrepresented Asian (such as Vietnamese, Cambodian, Filipino, etc.) or female; *Be enrolled in advanced mathematics courses (ideally pre-Algebra at seventh grade level up to and including Calculus before graduation from high school); *Have expressed an interest in pursuing an engineering, mathematics, or other technical career; and *Be in good standing in the school both academically and socially – the student must not be on academic probation or under any disciplinary action.

  •  Connections Club :

    Our club is comprised of students who want to make a positive difference and to learn more about ways to love and respect others with a more spiritual outlook. We are supported by the Young Life organization, with their area director & staff providing timely and thought-provoking lessons to our members at each meeting, as well as a time of fellowship and fun. We meet on alternating Thursday afternoons from 2:00 to 3:10.   Click here to view our flyer and parental permission slip to attend our meetings.

  • Culture Club :

    The Culture Club is for 8th grade students who love learning about world culture through enriched lessons, guest speakers, authentic meals and field trips to local historical sites. It is a club dedicated to the exposure and exploration of different cultures around the world. This organization meets one Thursday a month and the cost is $20 for a Culture Club t-shirt and for the cost of food supplies. Meeting times are from 2:15 to 3:45. Students must find their own transportation home.

  • D & D Club :

    The Adventurers’ Guild is a Dungeons & Dragons club in which students use critical thinking, problem-solving, and social skills to participate in epic quests.

  •  Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)  :

    What is FBLA? FBLA is the premier organization for students preparing for careers in business. Through FBLA, members gain the competitive edge for career and/or college success. By taking advantage of the many programs FBLA offers, students acquire the skills that set them apart from the average middle school student.
    What does FBLA do? FBLA provides the business leaders of tomorrow with the necessary skills to successfully compete in the job market, pursue postsecondary education, or manage personal skills. Members learn how to lead and participate in group discussions by engaging in practical problem solving and decision-making activities. FBLA members learn the value of competition through directed competitive events.

    • Sharpen public speaking skills by leading discussions, presenting workshops, and giving speeches

  • Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA)

    FCCLA is a national Career and Technical Student Organization that provides personal growth, leadership development, and career preparation opportunities for students in Family and Consumer Sciences education (

  • Greet Squad

    Greet Squad is a group of students who welcome new Chargers to our school. They show them around the building, introduce them to fellow students, faculty, and staff. Greet Squad members help new students to have a smooth transition.

  •  Ladies of Distinction

    The Ladies of Distinction mentor program was developed by Jennell Riddick and is offered in 19 schools throughout Hampton Roads. It provides character development and character education sessions to participating female students. Topics include: Developing Healthy Self-esteem, Developing a Positive Attitude, Choosing Friends Wisely, Respecting Self and Others, Handling Peer Pressure and Difficult People, and Living Healthy Lifestyles (physically and emotionally). The JYMS Ladies of Distinction meet on the 1st Tuesday of each month after school and participate in events with other girls in surrounding Ladies of Distinction groups.

  •  Recycling Club

    The John Yeates Recycling Club educates and prepares the students at JYMS to strive for a healthy and clean environment. We help take care of the school garden, we sponsor the 8th grade semi-formal, and we make the Earth, our community and our school a better place. Join us at our first meeting on Thursday, September 28th from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM as we plant new crops in our school garden. Return a signed permission slip to Mrs. Hayes (Room 1) or Miss Rubash (Room 3).

  •  Student Council Association (SCA) : 

    Student Council is an organization designed to give students an opportunity to accept responsibility and learn leadership skills to apply in real-life situations. One representative, elected from each homeroom, and officers of the John Yeates Student Council represent their student body and help in planning exciting events for the school.
