Clipart is back….

Teachers & Students: I’ve fixed the clipart issue in MS Office. You should now be able to see all of the clipart when searching within Office.

Techs & Geeks: On ISA Server, make sure traffic destined for office.microsoft.com is not using the ‘Microsoft Update Cache Rule.’ The clipart search and BITS caching don’t get along.

Network Maintenance

The Tech Dept. will be doing network maintenance and upgrades at Robertson Elementary School beginning around 4:30 pm today (1/14/08). RES users can expect intermittent connectivity during this time. All network services will be affected, including:

  • Phone service
  • Gradespeed
  • RenPlace
  • Internet
  • Email
  • My Documents

NextGEN

SPS BLoggers,

I’ve installed a new plugin on the blog server today: NextGEN. NextGen is a feature rich image gallery that enables you to organize and display pictures on your blog.

NextGEN key features:

  • organize your images into galleries
  • click on thumbnail to enlarge images
  • display galleries in your posts and pages
  • display images in your sidebar (widgets)
  • slideshows

I’ll try to get some help docs posted soon. Until then, feel free to play with it and figure it out.

Heres a few example galleries for you to check out:

Windows Desktop Search

The helpdesk has received quite a few calls this morning from users claiming that their computers are running very slow. I did a little snooping around and noticed that Windows Desktop Search had been installed on most of our computers over the past few days. I knew for certain that we hadn’t deployed this software, as it is a major resource hog. I did a little Googling to figure out what was up and soon realized that we were not the only Microsoft users seeing the issue. I came across 2 blog posts from the Microsoft WSUS team where they admitted that they had goofed up here and here.
Windows Desktop Search

To remedy this problem, I have disabled the Windows Search service on all of the computers using a group policy and used a script to remove the ‘update’. You should see that performance has returned to normal. On your next reboot, the search box will be removed from your taskbar.

EDIT: see this post for detailed instructions on removing this update from your systems
