Week 13

November 25, 2017

I hope everyone had a restful Thanksgiving and enjoyed this long weekend as much as I did!

This week we will begin to compare fractions and decimals (SOL 5.2b) in math. Students will have a quiz on 5.2a and b on Thursday, November 30, 2017. On Friday we will begin adding fractions (SOL 5.6).

In reading and writing, we will begin Task 1 of the Environmentalist Writing Performance Based Assessment.  We will learn about acid rain and climate change, invasive species (to include Burmese pythons!), deforestation, and noise, light, and visual pollution.  Each week before our holiday break we will read a/some different supporting text(s), watch introductory videos, and read online passages on each of these four topics. We will focus on gathering information to use when we complete Task II of the PBA at the beginning of the third nine weeks when students will report on the positive and negative impact humans have on ecosystems. Students will complete graphic organizers and focus questions on each topic and then create and share a visual presentation. Students will complete these visual presentations individually, in pairs, or in small groups.

In social studies, we will learn about the colonial social groups.  In science, we will continue to learn about SOL 5.4 matter and the elements.
