Week four!

Friday, ALMOST all of us completed the NWEA MAP reading assessment, despite huge technical difficulties on Wednesday.  This week we will complete the NWEA MAP math diagnostic assessment on Wednesday.

In reading, we will be working on summarizing the beginning, middle, and endings of the chapter(s) we will finish reading this week.  We will work on writing sentences with splendid synonyms and antonyms in writing, and will learn about plural nouns.  Students will continue to work with new vocabulary using dictionaries and writing sentences with five parts of speech using that week’s vocabulary word. We will practice making inferences with picture books and have an assessment on Friday on inferences.

In math, we will work on SOL 5.4 word problems using an eight-step method we will learn about tomorrow that will utilize a model drawing strategy.

In science, we will conduct the scientific investigation experiment we scheduled to complete on Friday.  We will continue to work on SOL 5.2, sound and take a quiz on Friday, September 29, 2017.  We will continue with the eight geographic regions in social studies and take a quiz on the regions’ characteristics and locations.

Students have homework in each subject this week.  Please see the tabs above for math and for all other subjects.

Week 3!

September 17, 2017

This week in math we will work on solving single and multi-step word problems in math (SOL 5.4) after working on long division.

In reading, we will work on making inferences and conclusions (SOL 5.5i, 5.6g), as well as summarizing using the beginning, middle, and end of chapters from novels we will be reading in small groups. We will also continue with our shared reading of Shades of Grey by Carolyn Reeder (a historical fiction set just after the Civil War).  We will also engage in read alouds, share read passages, and partner up with Partner Plays to assist with the skill of inferencing.

On Wednesday, September 20, 2017, we will take the NWEA MAP reading assessment.  This diagnostic tool will assist in determining where students currently are in reading comprehension and vocabulary.

In science, we will continue to learn about sound (SOL 5.2) and scientific investigation (SOL 5.1).

In social studies, we will continue learning about the eight geographic regions and their locations/characteristics.  We will keep working on the Regions Song.  Don’t be surprised if you hear your student singing something that should sound like it goes to the tune of the YMCA song.

There is homework in reading/writing, social studies, and science, which will all be due on Friday, September 22, 2017.  Copies are posted above under this week’s homework. Instructions for accessing the science textbook are included on the weekly homework sheet.
