Welcome to Grade 4   FABULOUS FOURTH GRADERS

Dear Students and Families,

Well, you all made it through the first nine weeks with enthusiasm, effort, and energy.  I am very proud of you all for proving that you really are Fabulous Fourth Graders.   For the next nine weeks we will be expanding our knowledge in all subject areas.  In Virginia Studies, we will examine the everyday lives of the colonists and learn about the differences that they had with the Parliament in England.  Do you know what a REVOLUTION is?  Look at the root word for a clue.  In Science, all I can say is “May the Force Be With You!”  We will be working with our unit on Force, Motion, and Energy.  Look around you for a day and see how many examples of  force, motion, and energy that you can find.  In Math we will continue exploring decimals, and will start new units on volume, polygons, weight, and geometry.  We will also play with patterns and functions.  You know that Mrs. Fowler will find ways to use make patterns out of cereal and other food so get ready to play with your food.  We will extend our writing this semester to include informative and explanatory writings.  Can you explain the steps you would take to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?  Will you make your AR goal this nine weeks.  We will continue to read, read, read with guided reading, buddy reading, read – alouds, and and other opportunities for shared reading.  What is the next book that you want to read?

Get ready to impress yourselves with your energy, effort, and enthusiasm for the second nine weeks.  You impress me every day!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Donahue

Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to an exciting new year in grade four.  I am thrilled to be your teacher this year and I look forward to getting to know each of you.  We have an exciting year full of learning and fun, with many hands-on activities.  We will start Science by learning about weather. What do you know about Hurricane Irene?  In history, we will focus on Virginia Studies and learn about the colonists who started the Jamestown settlement.  Do you know how the Powhatan Tribe helped the colonists survive? Math will be an awesome experience as we challenge ourselves with decimals, fractions, division, and even algebra.  What math concepts can you learn using breakfast cereal? You will develop your writing skills with narratives, informative writing, persuasive writing, and research. What topics are you interested in researching? In Reading, you will start the year with fiction. What genre of books is your favorite? You will  learn to love reading!    Your schedule is posted below.  Please check the homework connection on the right.

You will be a fabulous fourth grader!

So, get ready to leap into learning!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Donahue
