Show Me What You Know

Posted by: Erin Luck | January 9, 2012 | No Comment |

Over the next few weeks we will be doing quite a bit of testing in our classroom. Please be sure you are talking with your child about the importance of trying their very best on each and every test!

Last week students took their STAR Math and STAR Reading tests, I will be sharing their scores with you at Parent/Teacher Conferences in February.

This week we are taking our Mid Year PALS assessment. Students will be tested on their spelling, words lists, letter sound knowledge, and of course their Reading Levels.

Then we will be taking our end of the 2nd 9 weeks Lanuage Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies tests. This will recap everything that we have gone over during this nine weeks.

Make sure to read with your child each and every night, the more access they have to words, the better readers they will become! If you have any questions about anything, please feel free to call the school at 934 – 6213

SOLs are coming up!

Can you believe that it is almost SOL time? While our first graders do not have to take the state SOL test, we do have city SOL tests that we will be taking at the same time the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are taking theirs.  Our students have worked very hard this year and they are more than ready for these tests! I just know that everyone will do a fantastic job.

We wish the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders the best of luck on their tests! GOOO Robertson!

Entering the 2nd 9 weeks

Posted by: Erin Luck | November 16, 2010 | No Comment |

Can you belive the first nine weeks has already passed us by? Students have been very busy since school started and the work load will only increase.

During the second nine weeks this is what we will be learning in school:
Language Arts
We are really going to focus on learning our blends and digraphs. We will continue to have word study each week.  There are different word study groups in our room and if you ever have a question about your childs words, please feel free to ask.  As always, we will continue to work on our High Frequency Words, we play games and read stories everyday to work on these.  It’s very important to our reading foundation that we learn these words, and we have done a great job so far!

Writing
This nine weeks, students will focus on coming up with their own sentences that are related to a specific topic. Please help your child remember that every sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with some sort of punctuation.

Math
We will be very busy in Math! We are working on skip counting right now – students have to be able to count by 5’s, 10’s, and 2’s to 100.  They also have to count backwards from 30 to 0.  We already worked on ordinal positions, but it never hurts to continue at home! Ask your child to find an object in a certain position, left to right, right to left, top to bottom, and bottom to top. We will also be working on fractions this 9 weeks – 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4.  You can find tons of things in your house to work on fractions! Pizza night anyone? After progress reports, we will work on addition and subtraction which we have been working on since the beginning of the year with our Robertson Speedway.  Students have done a fantastic job and I know that they will just breeze right through it!

Science
Right now in science we are talking about our natural resources: water, air, plants, land, soil, minerals, animals, and forests.  We will also learn about motion: circular, curved, straight, and back and forth.  Science will be very hands on this nine weeks, so be sure to ask your child to share what we are learning!

Social Studies
Governments and maps will take up most of our time this nine weeks.  We will be making and reading tons of maps! Ask your child to help you make a map of your house!

As always if you ever have any questions, please feel free to ask!
