In Class We Are…

This week, we will continue with the theme, “Ready for Kindergarten”.  We will read counting books and talk about how numbers are used. We will make a number collage after we find pictures of different numbers in magazines.  The new letter of the week is letter Nn and we will meet Nile Noodle.  Please continue to review all letters and letter sounds at home.

 

Field Day

Field Day is this Tuesday.  Please have your child wear a white shirt and bring a water bottle.  Please make sure to pack his/her lunch if you indicated you would so so.  If you would like to put sunscreen on your child, please apply it at home.

 

Field Trip

Our field trip is next Wednesday May 18, 2016.  We are going to Kids Fest at Kids Zone Park (behind Farm Fresh in downtown Suffolk).

 

Home Activities:

*Nn Hunt – write the word Numbers at the top of a piece of construction paper.  Write number words from one to ten on the paper.  Read the words with your child.  Have your child find and circle the Nns in the words.  Count the Nns you find.

*Finding numbers- look for numbers around your neighborhood and when you go on errands.  Have your child name the numbers.  Talk about what the numbers mean.

*Count – have your child choose things to count in your house, yard, or on your way to the store (cars, signs, etc.)

*Continue to practice your child’s personal information with them.

 

Save the Date!!

We will have our end of the year celebration on Thursday, June 15 at 10:30.  We have already started practicing the songs.

In School We Are…

This is our final week on our unit called “Growing and Changing.” We will continue to discuss how things grow and change.  We will do an activity using the lifecycle of a butterfly to discuss how they grow and change using different shaped pasta.  We will also meet Dudley Duck and learn about letter “Dd” this week.

 

Letters We Have Learned

So far we have learned 22 letters!!!!  We only have 4 more to go!  Please review the letters and sounds with your child regularly.  The letters we have learned are Ss, Pp, Tt, Oo, Xx, Uu, Yy, Ww, Ff, Aa, Zz, Bb, Rr, Cc, Qq, Vv, Jj, Hh, Ii, Gg, and Ee.

 

Kindergarten Registration

Please make sure you have registered your child for Kindergarten.  All Early Start students need to be registered before the end of the school year.  If you need assistance with this, please contact me.  The next mass Kindergarten Registration date is on May 4th from 8-5.  If you have not registered your child, please do so on this day.

 

Dog Day

 

This Wednesday, April 27th, we will be having Dog Day.  Please have your child bring in a stuffed dog that will fit in his/her book bag.  If you have a dog as a pet, your child can bring in a picture.  We will be reading about dogs, making a dog craft, and sharing the items that each student bring in.

 

Home Activities:

*Looking for Dd – look for Dds on food packaging such as cereal boxes and on label cans.  You can also look for Dds on signs around your neighborhood.  Encourage your child to tell you whether the letter they found is a capital D or a lowercase d.

*Continue to review all letters and letter sounds.

*Practice all personal information

*Practice counting to at least 20.

In School We Are…

This week we will continue with the theme “Growing and Changing.” This week we will learn about spring.  We will read stories about how plants and animals grow and change in the spring.  The letter for this week is Letter Ee.    We will be making an elephant craft in class this week!

 

 

Kindergarten Registration

The next kindergarten registration will take place on May 4th from 8:00 to 5:00.  Every student must register for kindergarten for next year.  You must go to your child’s home school to register.  If you have any questions, please let me know.  If you did not register your child at the first registration, please do so at this one!

 

Field Trip

Please make sure to fill out and turn in your field trip form for our trip to Nansemond River High school to see the play Aladdin!  They will be in your child’s folder today.

 

 

Home Activities:

*Ee Egg – Draw an egg on drawing paper.  Write Ee at the top of the paper and Egg at the bottom.  Point out that egg begins with e.  Look for Ees in the newspaper and magazine headlines with your child.  Cut them out and help your child glue them on the egg.  Also look for pictures that begin with the letter E or have your child draw the pictures.

*Practice counting to at least 20 and counting up to 20 objects.

*Practice personal information.

*Practice all letters and sounds by using flashcards, games, computer games, etc.

*READ, READ, READ!!!

March 7th- March 11th

In School We Are…

This week we will begin a new theme called “Let’s Move!”  We will learn about movement.  We will read stories about the different ways we move, such as running, skipping, sliding, and jumping.  We will also practice moving in many ways.   The new letter this week is Jj and we will meet Jumping Jill.  Please continue to review all of the letters and letter sounds we have learned so far.  (Ss, Pp, Tt, Oo, Xx, Uu, Yy, Ww, Ff, Aa, Zz, Bb, Mm, Rr, Cc, Qq, Vv)

Please continue to practice having your child write his/her name since this is expected when they enter kindergarten.  (You can have them practice writing their last name if they have mastered their first name.)

 

Kindergarten Registration

Please plan on registering your child for Kindergarten on Wednesday.  The registration is at all elementary schools, but you must go to your child’s home school to register.  Registration will take place from 8:00am-5:00pm.  It is very important that all Early Start students are registered for Kindergarten.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this.

 

Home Activities

*Jumping Jack or Jill – Make a stick puppet. Tell your child that the figure is Jumping Jack or Jill and that he/she likes the letters Jj.  Look for Jjs in newspaper and magazine headlines with your child. Have him/her make the puppet “jump” each time he/she sees Jj.

*Your child will listen to the story “The Gingerbread Man” on Wednesday.  Ask him/her to talk about the story and name the characters that try to catch the gingerbread man.  Share other versions of this story with your child.

In School We Are…

This week we will focus on the city.  Using the topic “The Busy, Busy City,” we will read stories abut what it is like to live in the city and how people get around there. Our new letter this week is letter Qq and we will meet Queenie Queen.  Please review the letters and letter sounds that we have learned this year with your child. (Ss, Pp, Tt, Oo, Xx, Uu, Yy, Ww, Ff, Aa, Zz, Bb, Mm, Rr, and Cc)

 

CRAZY SOCKS

Please bring in a pair of crazy socks for our door decorating contest.  We will be finishing up our door by Wednesday for the Dr. Seuss door decorating contest.  Thanks in advance!

In Class We Are…

We will begin a new theme this week called “In the City, In the Country”.  This week we will learn about the country.  Using the topic “Country Life,” we will read stories about rural areas and farms, and what it is like to live there.  The letter of the week is letter Cc and we will meet Callie Cat.  Please continue to review all of the letters and sounds we have learned so far in school. (Ss, Pp, Tt, Oo, Xx, Uu, Yy, Ww, Ff, Aa, Zz, Bb, Mm, and Rr)  Knowing all letters and letter sounds will give your child a good start in kindergarten next year.

 

Dates to Remember:

*February 24th- Scholastic Book Order Due

*February 25th- Father/Daughter Dance (6pm-8pm)  Please RSVP by Friday in order to get a spot for the photo booth.

*March 11th- Kindergarten Registration (at your child’s home school) All Early Start Students must be registered for Kindergarten.  Please plan on attending this registration anytime between 8am and 5pm.

Home Activities:

*Country Poster – collect Cc from newspaper and magazine headlines with your child.  Write Country on drawing paper.  Find pictures of farm animals whose names begin with v, such as cows.  Help your child glue the animals pictures and letters Cc to the drawing paper to make a poster.

*Country Books – your child will listen to a story titled “The Billy Goat in the Garden” on Wednesday. Ask him/her to tell about the naughty billy goat.  Read other books about farm animals with your child.

In School We Are…

This week we will begin a new unit called, “Construction Zone”.  We will learn about building things.  Using the topic, “I Can Build,” we will read stories about tools, materials, buildings, and construction.  Our new letter this week is letter Bb and we will meet Benny Bear.  Please review this letter as well as the letters and letter sounds that we have learned this year (Ss, Pp, Tt, Oo, Xx, Uu, Yy, Ww, Ff, Aa, and Zz).

 

Conferences

Conferences will be held the week of February 8th.  I will have times available before school, after school, and during nap time.  If you would like to meet with me to discuss your child’s progress, please let me know.  I will be contacting parents that I would like to meet with to set up a time that works best.  Thank you!

 

Home Activities:

*Bb Poster – Gather Bbs from newspaper or magazine headlines.  Help your child make a Bb poster.  You can decorate the poster by adding pictures, photographs, or drawings of things whose names start with Bb.

*Learning the ABCs – Your child will listen to the alphabet book Alphabet Under Construction this week, page through other alphabet books together, paying special attention to the ABC order.  Encourage your child to predict what letter you will read about next in the book.

In Class We Are…

This week is our last week in the theme Animals Everywhere.  We are reading a big book about baby animals.  We will read stories about animal families from around the world.  The letter of the week is letter Zz and we will meet Zelda Zebra.  Please continue to review all the letters and letter sounds that we have learned so far this year.  They are Ss, Pp, Tt, Oo, Xx, Uu, Yy, Ww, Ff, and Aa.  Daily review makes a big difference!  We are also practicing sorting objects.  We sort objects by size, color, and shape.  Have your child practice sorting things at home and tell how he/she sorted the objects.

 

Raising A Reader

I hope you all are enjoying the Raising A Reader bags.  This is just a reminder that bags are due back on Tuesdays. We do our best to get them back out on Wednesdays, but in order for this to happen, we need them back on Tuesdays to check in and to make sure all of the books are in the bag and in good condition.  Thank you for your cooperation with this.

 

Home Activities:

*Zz Collage – Write Zz at the top of a large piece of paper.  Help your child find Zz and pictures of objects whose names begin with Zz in magazines or catalogs.  Glue them onto the paper.  You can also draw your own pictures of Zz objects.  If you do a collage, please send it in to share with the class.

*Animal Homes – Your child will listen to a story titled “Who’s in Rabbit’s House?”  Ask him/her to tell you who was in Rabbit’s house.  Read other books about animals with you child.  Point out and discuss the different places where the animals live.  If you have a good animal book at home, please send it in so I can read it to the class.  I’m always looking for good books to share!

*Practice Personal Information- Have your child practice his/her own name, parent’s names, address, phone number, age, and birthday.

In Class We Are…

This week, we will be learning more about animals.  We will read more about the many different animals in our world.  The letter of the week is Aa and we will meet Andy Apple.  Please review all of the letters and letter sounds that we have learned this year:  Ss, Pp, Tt, Oo, Xx, Uu, Yy, Ww, and Ff.  It is important to review letters regularly so that your child can master the entire alphabet this year.

 

Home Activities:

Aa Hunt – Look for words that begin with capital A and lowercase a with your child in magazine and newspaper headlines.  Circle and count the letters you find.  Encourage your child to draw the letters on a blank of piece of paper.

Counting Books – Your child will listen to the counting book One Moose, Twenty Mice this week.  Ask him/her to tell about the animals in the book.  Look through other counting books with your child.  Encourage him/her to count the objects on each page and to predict what number will come next.

Alphabet Books- Use alphabet books to review letters and sounds with your child.  You can check one out of the library or make one of your own.

Alphabet Concentration – Use letter cards of the letters that we have learned so far (uppercase and lowercase) to play concentration with your child.  When you pick a letter, you have to name the letter before you pick another letter.

Personal Information- Please practice your child’s personal information at home with him/her daily.  This includes name, parent’s names, age, birthdate, address, and phone number J

This Week In School…

This is the last week for our unit, “Seasons All Around”.  This week, we will be reading about how the weather changes throughout the year.  We will be meeting Willie Worm and letter Ww this week.  We will be making some fun crafts and having our Winter Celebration on Friday morning.  Thank you to everyone who has already brought or volunteered to bring in supplies for Friday!

 

Letter Review

Please review the letters and sounds we have learned at home daily with your child.  The letters we have learned are:

Ss, Pp, Tt, Oo, Xx, Uu, and Yy

 

Holiday Celebration

Our Holiday Celebration will be on Friday December 18th.  Please contact me to sign up to bring something for the celebration.
