Preterite vs. Imperfect sentences

Tell why either the preterite or imperfect forms of the verbs in bold are used.

P1—Single, complete event.

P 2—The conclusion or end point of a story.

P3—When telling how long an action lasted or when it specifically occurred.

P4—An interrupting action.

 

I1—Incomplete or ongoing event.

I2—Description (past)

I3—Telling time in the past.

I4—Habitual past actions.

1.        Eran las once de la noche cuando mi hermano volvió a casa.

 

2.        Comíamos en el restaurante cuando él entró.

 

3.        En el pasado, Ricky Martin siempre cantaba “Livin’ La Vida Loca” durante los conciertos, pero anoche no la cantó.

 

4.       Aunque el atleta era muy fuerte, sólo levantó doscientas libras.

 

5.       Mientras veía el programa “Jerry Springer” anoche, descubrí que el hombre era muy guapo.

 

6.       Estuve en San José sólo tres días porque siempre hacía muchísima calor durante el verano.

 

7.       Mi perrito estaba tan cansado que por fin se durmió en el sofá.

 

8.       Mi hermana menor normalmente no comía hamburguesas, pero un día tenía muchísima hambre y las probó.

 

9.       Los campistas esperaban en las montañas cuando empezó a llover.

Our exam for U1E3 will be this coming Monday, November 5th.  In order to satisfy the writing requirement, there will be a composition section on the test.  This section will be comprehensive and include the verb conjugations of all preterite verbs learned in unit 1.  Please be familiar with these verbs by Monday!

For my little pollitos in Spanish I, here is the writing rubric to reference for our assessment this Thursday and Friday.  The topic will be on SELF-DESCRIPTION.  Please study all vocabulary and grammar from the first unit to successfully complete this work and earn a great quiz grade!

Sentences:

1–Most not logical

2–Somewhat logical

3–In logical order

4–Logical with some flow

5–Flow purposefully

Details:

1–Few details

2–Some basic details

3–Sufficient basic details

4–Substantial details

5–Clear and vivid detail

Organization:

1–Very little organization

2–Poorly organized

3–Some organization

4–Sufficiently organized

5–Strong organization

Accuracy:

1–Errors prevent comprehension

2–Comprehensible, yet many errors

3–Some spelling and agreement errors throughout

4–A few errors

5–Very few errors

GRADES:

A–17-20 points

vocabulario-u1e3-spanish-i.doc  For those of you who prefer an electronic copy of the vocabulary–here is our next list.  The quiz on these words will not be until Tuesday/Wednesday of next week (October 23rd and24th).  Please remember that you can make flashcards of these words for extra credit on the exam.
