Reading: We are reading stories that deal with making predictions and ask/answer questions. Our word skills this week are long u (CVCe pattern), blends, and verbs. Writing will focus on describing words and other skills such as complete sentences, punctuation and capitalization, letters and lists.
Math: We will be continuing to work on place value. Students have been working with manipulatives to understand grouping objects into tens and ones and then counting the total set. Students need to know that each number has a value. For example, the 3 in 37 is worth 30. When you break down the number into expanded form, it is helpful as well. 48 = 40 + 8 (4 tens = 40 and 8 ones = 8).
Science: We will begin our unit on animals (1.5). Students need to know the basic needs of animals, their coverings, how they move, the types of homes they have (water or land), and wild or domestic animals. We will study this unit till the end of February.
Social Studies: We will begin our unit on famous leaders, beginning with George Washington. Terms to know include contribution and holiday. A contribution is something someone does or gives. A holiday is a special day to celebrate someone or something. Our famous leaders’ study will continue through the third nine weeks.
Notes: Remember that the Parent/Teacher conference scheduled for February 13 is cancelled; We will also be attending school Monday, February 20 (President’s Day).
