Ms. Story
Well Ms.Story To Tell You The Truth I Really Don’t Remeber The Disciplines Of Science. But, I can tell you the few things that I thought were intresting.
1.As the paient is using the virtual reality the brain is enjoying it.
2.The virtual reality helps the patients mind become occupied and forget remebering the pain.
3.The M.R.I.s also showed that the pain signals were reduced .
4.there was a signifigant inprovement in the motion the patient was able to do.
5.And as the patinet was using the virtual reality he/she had an increase in comfort.
The researchers showed that as the patient was using the virtual reality that he/she was almost inable to focus on the pain because the brain was in an enjoyment stage and barely sent out pain signals.
And Please Ms.Story Take this as a replacment of what I didn’t Know.
Thank You

i think its pretty awesome.
i cant think of how to discuss it scientifically though, except entertainment canceling out memories of an opposing nature

Tia: “disciplines of science” … means the different branches of science.
For example: From this I infer that the psychology of an event and neurology (the transmission of pain along nerve cells)are interconnected.
Your reflections are very good … many different “disciplines” of science are represented in your comments.
Andrew: It is cool! What type of researchers/doctors are uniting to bring this new treatment into fruition?

Aw that’s neat! I like how the people of virtual reality types of sciences come together to help doctors help people in pain. I guess the cold really helps the brain stay away from the thought of pain and fire!

Some of the discplines of science that this article includes are cytology, since it deals with cells, Psychology (as you said) since it deals with the psychological state of mind, and medical biology ,<- not sure that’s right, since it deals with medicine.
I thought this article was very interesting since it dealt helped with treating burns. The burns were severe and they invented a device that helped treat pains associated with burns. The fact that snow world, a virtual reality system, actually helped take the mind off of severe painful feelings was interesting.

How Awesome!
I watch the video about snow world. Its looks very fun and it is also a great way to reduce the pain.
talking about the disciplines of science…. It sort of uses psychology to get the mind thinking of different things when undergoing procedures.

This is some pretty neat stuff. I like how these scientist use their time to create a video game to help patients of burn incidents past time and kept their mind off of their surgery or treatment. By concentrating on snow, the opposite of fire, their minds are focusing on the game and preventing their minds from viualizing the painful treatments, resulting in the body from feeling the pain. This is also important to health, less drugs and more fun! This game was a great idea by not just using it for entertainment but for health treatments too. I guess this is my discussion, I hope its what you were looking for.

Wow. that’s a terrible fate for anyone. I truly hope Mr. Brown is recovering well.
But this was a really enlightening little video. I love the way scientists have engineered a way to help ease pain.
I’ve always read and heard that pain is just a signal, all in the mind. It was only a matter of time before people realized that you can reduce something mental from outside forces.
So there are some definitely pyschology workings going on here. And an impressive bit of mechanics. Sorry, I know that’s not really science related but it couldn’t go without saying :). But I guess it would be physics as it’s a science/math/engineering type combo going on as far as the actual machine goes.
And really, I’m amazed that technology has come so far and for such a good cause.

Well, this article really was interesting. It’s definitely associated with Psychology though - which I’m really interested in - along with biology in the “More Fun, Less Drugs” section. This was really interesting and I’m happy to see there’s an effective way of comforting the burn victims.

Wow, the video was really cool and the article was really interesting. The disciplines of science that were associated with this were neurology and phsycology because they were talking about how the patients felt less pain because their brains were distracted by the game.

Ms. Story
I thought this was a good article. I think the VR was very helpful way for Brown and other burn victims to forget about their pain. When they’re in the snow world they don’t focus on their wounds and scars, they just have a good time. The fun out-weighs the pain when they are in the snow world. Psychology deffinately has a big role in this article because the pain is all in the mind;according to the article.[if the burn victims are not focused on pain, the pain is not noticable to them=] This research finding shouldn’t be used just for burn victims, it should be used for all victims with pain[it seems very effective].

Disciplines I found
1.pshycology
2.Medical science
The snow world helped relieve some of the patient’s pain because of the signals that were beng sent to the brain.. I think Doctor’s should use this technology more often because it could be very helpful in the other procedures performed in hospitals everyday..

I think the human mind is pretty amazing. Even though LT brown was in incredible pain, the video game was enough to occupy his mind and reduce the pain. The science of this is pretty impressive and makes me more interested in pschology and how the human mind works. I wonder if other games can be created to help other types of victims.

Wow, thats pretty amazing.
I like how Ravynn said that pain was all in the mind, because thats what this game proves. With it the patients aren’t focused on their pain, but on something that they enjoy. I mean how are they going to not think about pain when they’re watching the nurse take off their bandages and they see their wounds. So when it comes to the disciplines of science quite obviously psychology, because its working within the mind and i think cytology, because of the regrowing skin, and if i’m correct pharmacology(drugs), because they no longer need to be used. Also, I don’t know if this is a science but it deals with stimuli and the body’s reactions, because the game is a stimulus for the brain.
See you in class tomorrow

I think the virtual reality game is a wonderful thing for helping veterans with their therapy. It makes them feel as if they still can have fun despiting their injury. It also helps them as they are having fun. I think it’s a great invention and I hope it gets to help rehabilitate many people.
November 17th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
That article was very interesting. I would have never guessed that a virtual game could take someone’s mind off of pain. I think that psycology was used in the virtual game.
November 18th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Who would have thought that psycological illusions could actually help a victim forget about their pain. I think that the game is great because it helps the victims to escape their pain in reality. I guess “pain is in the mind”…
