This is a GREAT site on cells.  (Dezmond, I saw you put it up a few posts ago!)

Go here to review … lots of fun and awesome animation.

Mrs. S.

Hope all of you had a great Turkey Day!  Happy Holidays is up next. :-)

This is a reminder that you have a unit test on Cells this Thursday.  It will cover the material in Chapter 7.  On Tuesday we will review cell structures and go over the information in section 3.

REMINDER: Your assignment for Tuesday was to have drawn some pictures with a explanation of the vocabulary words and concepts in section 3.

HOW TO STUDY FOR the test.

1.  Have you been reviewing your chart and diagrams?  2.  Have you worked the review and practice test at the end of the chapter?  3.  Memorize, memorize, memorize.  That’s is the key to this chapter.  There is not a lot of analogy but a lot of memorizing. 4.   Ask your family to quiz you on the structures and functions, it is a good study technique.  5.  Arrange to get together one night after school with a small group of PIBB students and study together.       6.  Review a little EVERY DAY from now to test time  (did I say that already??:-) )

This is your first major test for the second 9 weeks.  Let’s all do well!  See you Tuesday.

I am not posting the student note form until Wed.  I ran into a snag with the plan and so you do not have to print anything for Wed.  I will have you do it over the holiday break.

For homework:  Study your structure and function sheet.  Go over them again and again, starting to prepare for your test next week.

Read through Ch. 7.3.  Take some “picture” notes (notes with little diagrams that explain vocabulary  :-)  ) on this section in your journal.

See you Wed.

Ms. Story

This is a reminder … a double check.

1.  News Review:  I handed you the article to read with the following instructions,  Paragraph one and two are to be a summary of each viewpoint presented (i.e.  the hunters, the environmentalists).  Paragraph three should critique the consequences of either side “winning” the argument via legislation.

2.  Complete the chart on the function of cell organelles.  REVIEW Ch. 7, sections 1 and 2.  You should be masterying this material.

See you Monday.

This is a reminder that the test on basic chemistry and water chemistry is this Friday for my general biology classes (BLKS 2,4,7)  This is the material in your text:  Ch. 6.1 and 6.2.

Review your notes, your lab journal notes, the pH lab we did, and your vocabulary.  We have gone over many of the vocabulary terms and concepts multiple times so you should have them in many places, explained in many forms.

Practice drawing atoms, atoms like:  C, H, O, and N.  Review the chemical symbols of the common elements.

Practice drawing the water molecule, and then 3 water molecules together showing the proper polarity (the oxygen end charged neg. and the hydrogen ends charged +)

Review the concept of ‘density’ … and how water’s ability to hold heat affects our weather.

Study so that you can earn a good grade on this first test.  :-)

Please study Ch. 7.3 and use the handouts as a guide through this section.  I’ve asked you to read ALL of chapter 7, so this should be your time to focus with some detail on 7.3.

Whatever you get done in the handout packet I gave you, the less homework you will have for next week.

For Tuesday:  be prepared to discuss the cell …

1.  Differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells

2.  Differences between animal and plant cells

3.  Each cell organelle.

Mrs. S

PROBLEM:  What are the pH levels of various substances around a common household?

RESEARCH:  Basic info on the pH scale ….

HYPOTHESIS:  (skip)

PROCEDURE:  (2-3 general steps)  Test and record at least 20 different substances.

(Variety is good:  cleaning agents, foods, medicines, beverages, fertilizer, saliva, etc … )

DATA COLLECTION:  3-column chart with the headings;  Substances,    pH,     Acid/Base/Neutral

CONCLUSIONS:  Analyze your findings.

After reading this article, gather together the various disciplines of science that all intersect in this new, inovative treatment.  Everyone post your findings and thoughts here on the blog.

INTERESTING INFORMATION:  How old was he when Sir Issac Newton wrote the letter to him that contains our quote?

“If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulder of giants.”  Sir Issac Newton  (Letter to R. Hooke, 1676)

Robert Hooke, the English father of microscopy, re-confirmed Antony van Leeuwenhoek’s discoveries of the existence of tiny living organisms found under the microscope in a drop of water. Hooke made a copy of Leeunwenhoek’s microscope and used it to confirm other observations reported by Leeunwenhoek and to improve upon his design.

Robert Hooke
Robert Hooke invented the universal joint, the iris diaphragm, and an early prototype of the respirator; invented the anchor escapement and the balance spring, which made more accurate clocks possible, invented or improved meteorological instruments such as the barometer, anemometer, and hygrometer; and so on.

Robert Hooke
Robert Hooke is one of the most neglected natural philosophers of all time. The inventor of, amongst other things, the iris diaphragm in cameras, the universal joint used in motor vehicles, the balance wheel in a watch.

The Legacy of Robert Hooke
“He was of an active, restless, indefatigable Genius even almost to the last, and always slept little to his death, seldom going to sleep till two three, or four a Clock in the Morning, and seldomer to Bed, often continuing his Studies all Night, and taking a nap in the day. His temper was Melancholy….”

1.  Write your Jell-O lab in your journal.  a)  Skip spaces between each section of the scientific method.  b) include a simple diagram in your research section  c) the procedure should be in ’steps’ form    d) no personal pronouns in your scientific writing

2.  Sir Issac Newton Quote Reflection

3.  Study for a Water Chemistry Review Quiz
