Do you recognize this popular student question:  “Do you have a pencil I can borrow?”

When I joined the KFHS staff 2 years ago, I was inundated with this question the first 2 weeks and so I decided to “sell” pencils!  Yup … it’s now a Story tradition!  Pencils in Story’s room cost 25 cents!

The first year the Story pencil fund profitted over $200 and this past year over $150.  Now here’s the deal … all the monies went to Heifer International:  http://www.heifer.org/   Each year I promised to match the pencil fund monies (and so did my mom and dad! ) Therefore, the Story pencil fund has been able to buy quite a few animal pairs for people around the world.

At the Heifer site, 1.  start by going to the link; “Inside Heifer” and read their mission statement.

2.  Go to the link;  “Our Work” and watch a couple of the field videos, choosing an area of the world that you have an interest in. Report on the video you watched.

3.  Go to the link; “Get Involved” and click on Team Heifer.  As you know, one of the goals of the IB program is international study and involvement.  So this year, the Story PIBB classes will be a team! a “HEIFER TEAM!”  (Hmmm … that sounds a little weird :-)

4.  We need to:  A. choose a name for our team, B. choose a donation goal for the year,   C.  register and design a web page for the site,   D.  develop a plan for reaching our goal,  E.  choose 4 leaders per class to head up this year-long project.

5.  Check out “Projects” … should we pick a specific project to fund? Check out “Study Tours” … could you envision a group of us going on one together?

Blog your impressions:   … brainstorm possibilities and ideas.

Check out this web site  …  http://www.calacademy.org/index.php

I’d like you to roam around this site and make observations of things that you find interesting and informative.  This living museum has yet to open, but it looks pretty cool. Make sure you check out the live penguin cam. Check out the penguin’s keeper’s (Pam Schaller) personal info under “science heroes.”  She has some great informational videos posted.

It looks like you may ask questions of some of the directors at this amazing new science academy.  If you do and then receive an answer … let us know here on our blog.

Here are some questions to guide you as you look around the site and then post here:  What part of this site did you spend the most time exploring, and why? What new info did you gather from this site?  Would you like to visit this new “living museum?”   This museum employs individuals with many different biology backgrounds … what are some of them?
