Photo sample suggestions:
- The details of different leaf structures; their edging, their veins, their shades of color, their leaf arrangement,
- The progression of plant growth; from seed germination to fruition.
- A close-up view of insects in one’s yard that are hard ‘at work!’
- The diverse structures of garden flowers
- Going on vacation … what new plant or animal life might you document?
- A close-up view of people’s hands/skin at different ages of life.
Observations: Your observations for each photo should compare and contrast as many features as you can detect. Be investigative in your work. Notice details and trends that will be captured in your pictures. You may bullet your observations or write a concise paragraph for each photo.
Presentation: A scrap book, a photo journal, a display board, a power point, … your choice. Remember, it’s a minimum of 10 pics, you might end up with more. You will be presenting your project to your class the second week of school and they will be interacting with your work.
Have FUN!

Hey Mrs. Story!
Thanks a lot for the suggestions. I really didn’t know what I had to do from the blurb in the booklet.
I’m looking forward to being
torturedtaught by you this year. I was debating over it for a while, but it seems like I’ve made the right choice (because my teachers seem so nice!Kudos on the blog.
Heading over to the introductory post!

By the way, I was just joking about the tortured thing. Though it has been true with some previous science teachers… *shudders*
July 6th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Hey Ethan … thanks for the kudos!
I will truly try to not make you “shudder” this year! Or torture you either!

Hey Mrs. Story,
I’m Trevor Hall and thanks for the picture suggestions. I jsut recently went to San Diego and went to the famous San Diego Zoo. I took a lot of pictures of the wildlife there and intend on putting some of the pictures for my photo journal. I do have one question. Do we need to write a caption of the photo for each picture?
July 15th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
Trevor … yes, I’d like some type of copy/input/info/comment from you on your photos. I’m looking for some ‘observation’ type comments. Depending on how many you have and if you decide to group them in some fashion, you could comment on them as a group as well, maybe with some comparison and contrast info.
Hope this helps.

Yea I think your suggestions will help a lot. Thank you, Mrs. Story.

thanks for the suggeestions i think i am going to start this assignment today
July 27th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Awesome!!! So you CAN group pics together? I got some pics that don’t look like much on their own, but show something when their put next to each other.
Also, About ur suggestions. In the booklet it said pics that are about things in life, and i kinda thought that meant things like pictures that show instinct or pics that illistrate mothering, nursing, eating, stuff like that. am I wrong? Because I’d hate to be wrong. I’m already getting behind on all the projects, and I thought I was done with this one.
which I love, by the way. I love photography. I thought this was awesome when I learned what the assignment was.
July 27th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
You know, this might be why I’m behind. I keep going on the blog, instead of working. But I can’t help it. I don’t talk much in class, ( well, mostly), but on the computer I can check to see how idiotic I sound before I send it out into cyberspace.
You sound like an awesome teacher. I was kinda worried, because every subject I ever was interested in I got a teacher who really made it boring. Except for Profesora Bouchard in Spanish. Like in seventh grade I got Mr. App, and for the first time, I think i fell asleep in class, several times. I had been so excited about Pre- Algebra, and then Mr. App killed my one chance of enjoying the hideous subject of math.
Ok. I’m leaving now. Really. I’m off to do my summer assignments. Really I am. now if only I could convince myself of that…

Hi Emily,
You are not wrong! Your examples of mothering, nursing, eating … all processes that are very important to living organisms! I can’t wait to see your project. Sounds like you are doing an excellent job!
Now … how are you coming along on those other assignments???
I really did enjoy reading your blog entries. I’m looking forward to having you in class.

If you use a display board does it have to be a certain size?
July 29th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
thanks for the ideas Ms. Story this seems like an interesting assignment.

Hi Ms. Story,
My dad and I raise quail around the house. I was wondering if i did a picture presentation on the growth from them being in the incubator to being an adult bird, would it be alright?
August 6th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Dezmond … I’m sorry I never got back to you in a timely fashion! If you’ve already chosen a size, fine. If not, one of those trifolds from Walmart might be nice.
Drew … Sounds like a wonderful version of the project! Go for it!

Hey Ms. Story,
I have my pictures of animal and plant life from the Virgina Zoo and I was just wondering do we just post captions, detatils or a compare/contrast graph on each picture? Is that all we have to do?
August 8th, 2008 at 10:15 am
Hi Kendrick,
Maybe a cute, creative caption to your pictures might be fun … but then, make some observations of your organism … of which compare and contrast statements easily come when we note our observations. It is up to you how detail you might want to get with your own observations.
I saw that you are headed Jamaica on vacation … you might observe some pretty cool, unique animal and plant life there! Keep your eyes open for the greckos!

Hey Ms. Story
I have another question. When we group photos does that count as one photo or do you still count the individual photo?
August 10th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Hey Dezmond … that one I’m going to leave up to you. I’d like you to make the judgment call.
I would say that grouping your photos should not be a penalty … but a strength in making your observations of comparison.
So, you can decide.

Hi Ms. Story,
Do we have to use a digital camera for the photos? When you say “the amazing details of life”, does that also include things like baby animals and what not?
August 11th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Oh yeah, and can I also take pictures of like my baby neices, you know, doing things like playng and eating their first solid food or taking their first step or whatever?
August 14th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Hi Sharryl,
Lots of questions and my answer to all of them is, “yes.” I’m looking forward to seeing your pics and observations.

Ms. Story,
Thank Yoy!
August 22nd, 2008 at 10:02 am
Ms. Story,
Sorry, a bit of a typo. I hit “enter” too fast.
August 22nd, 2008 at 12:03 pm
Thanks!
I wasn’t sure about what to write; my mom was talking about researching the things I took pictures of.
I wanted to an opinionated project, and apparently, that’s what this is! Yay!
August 25th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
testing
August 28th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Ms. Story i was doing my project and am close to the end. Is it ok if i put a picture of the quail getting ready to get cooked? I wouldnt put any violent part of it in there, but if i was to put a picture of the quail already cleaned, would that be ok?
August 29th, 2008 at 7:33 am
Hi Drew … Yes, it’s okay. That’s all part of the food chain.
Good thinking.
Ms. S.

Are we able to do two different things for example (5 pictures of hands and 5 pictures of animals)
