February 2008

On Mon/Tues we will have a quiz on the stages of mitosis.  Be able to match what happens in each of the steps of mitosis with one of the 4 stages.  Be able to put the steps in order.

The test on this unit #10 will be next MON/TUES.   Topics covered:

Mitosis - Meiosis - Chromosome structures - the Human Karyotype.

Students:  Also review the DNA structure that we covered on the last test.  I will include some questions about the N-bases, etc. on this test too.

Assignment #1 - http://www.cellsalive.com/mitosis.htm

At this site, you are to:

1.  Click through each of the stages of mitosis:  Look at the summaries below the diagrams and put the information from each paragraph into a LIST form.  A BULLETED LIST FORM

2.  Watch the mitosis animation in full speed a few times

3.  At the left … click on Cell Cycle Link. Compare with the color diagram that you already copied from your textbook.  Q:Why is the S-phase important?   Q: How long is the reproductive cycle compared to the rest of a  cell’s life cycle?

4.  At the left … click on Puzzles link.  Then click on MITOSIS … complete the crossword puzzle.

Thursday - 6th block    and   Friday - 5th and 7th block

Parents and students:  please review (with your student) from your journal these 3 topics-

1.  DNA structure    2.  Cell Processes (cell puzzle)   3.  The comparison of DNA and RNA

We’ve reviewed these things in many ways.  I hope everyone does well.

I will be collecting science journals and grading many of the assignments that have been done in class.  I will also be looking for their second Lightbox activity (2 protozoans)

This video is quite dramatic, uses dramatic graphics and quite compelling appeal to all that is proposed.  But, as we’ve learned, rarely is ‘truth’ so black and white, but life is lived with hard choices, lived in the gray zones of decision-making that is often very difficult.

In the front of the room, we have a quote:

“The mark of an educated mind is to be able to entertain a thought without having to accept it.”         SOCRATES

Here is a rebuttle to An Inconvenient Truth:  http://www.cei.org/pdf/5821.pdf

What are some of your reflections about “truth” and “facts” that can be communicated through media?

What, do you think, are some of Mr. Gore’s motives for producing this film?

How easy is it, for anyone, to present something “fair and balanced?”  What influences our views of facts”

Take a look … it is coming up.  How should we participate?

Read up on calculating one’s “carbon footprint.”

Your test on this short unit will cover this vocabulary list, plus some questions on the historical people that discovered important facts about DNA in the past 60 years.

dna-vocab.doc

This is a short unit.  We will cover the structure of DNA and RNA.  This material will carry over to the next unit, UNIT #10 - Cell Reproduction.  It will be tested a second time with this material.  It will also carry over to Unit #11 - Protein Synthesis.  It will be tested a third time with this material.

Needless to say, the structure of DNA and RNA is VERY IMPORTANT to understand for the next 5 weeks.

Click on the “DNA Drop and Drag” activity.  This activity will be graded, so when you have successfully completed it, call me to see and grade.

NOTE:   After completing this activity, along with the textbook assignment (CH. 11.3), you should prepare yourself for a quiz on the structure of DNA

Hey … we’ve had 2 issues posted from our Bulldog newspaper staff.  There are some pretty good articles there.  It would be good place for an article on “Going Green” or some other inspirational story that ya’ll might suggest.

Take a look at the 2nd issue:

Comment on 2 or 3 of the articles, your thoughts and opinions.

A few 6th and 7th block students earned a nice million today … :-)

This is a good site to keep around for review on all our topics and then the SOL!
