Assignment to complete as homework by Monday, Feb. 11th.

Links:

1.  Human Energy Stories  “New Frontiers”   ———– summarize 4 of these three minute advertisements.

2.  Global Issues ——— surf the 10 topics.  Choose three and create five multiple choice questions for each.  The multiple choice questions should have at least 4 possible choices for answers.

3.  Energy Sources —– Use a fulkl sheet of journal paper to create A CHART that compares and contrasts:

               1. the nonrenewable energy sources

               2. the renewable energy sources

               3. the emerging energy sources

Be prepared to orally present any of these particular sections to the class … i.e. make sure you understand what you  write down!  :-)

Block 5 & 7 have their first “light box” observations due this MONDAY.

(Block 6 will have their first “light box” observations due next MONDAY.)

Textbook collection was this week!  Not only are all the textbooks in the school being scanned, but I have decided to collect them and keep them here in the classroom.  I find that I don’t use them as a resource as often as I’d like because rarely can I seem to get the students to bring their textbook … “It’s too big to carry!”  “I left it at home!”  “I brought the ‘even day’ bookbag and it’s in the ‘odd day’ bookbag.”  “Can I go to my locker and get it?”   “I can’t find mine.”  And the list of excuses goes on from here.

So, I’m going to try keeping a classroom set here and then when I want to use them as a resource, I will have everyone in them within minutes (minus the excuses and hassle.)  If any student wants to check one out for a particular reason, they are more than welcome to do so.

I’m also using review sites on the internet much more this quarter to see if this helps engage everyone in meaningful review.  It’s an adventure in postmodern learning!  I will gage their progress with weekly quizzes, making sure that we stay on track.  :-)

There will be no “News Reviews” for this semester.  :-)

If you haven’t heard … please ask your student what the new bi-weekly research assignment is!!!  The response from the kids has been very positive.  Ask to see their LIGHT BOX!

Students completed the diagram of the photosynthesis cycle.  We then reviewed, using the white boards, for 25 minutes!   I asked them lots of questions about photosynthesis and had them repeatedly draw the chem. equation that represents photosynthesis.

Please ask them at home to write out the equation that represents photosynthesis.  Ask them to include where each of the raw products came from and where each of the 2 products are going to.   The answer key is below.  We will get to cellular respiration next.

Here is an excellent site from George Mason University that clearly outlines what criteria their science department uses to evaluate good writing from their science students.  Take a look at the first page in general.  What does this science dept. say about their ecology class???

Then, click on the link:  “practical tips for science writing. ”

Post ONE of the practical tips below.  Pick one that is seems important for you to pay attention to … perhaps one that you did not know was important.

Underline the “title of the tip” that you are posting and then copy the info that follows.  Once a tip is posted, then it is ‘off the list.’

1.  Copy the diagram in your journal.

2.  Create a “matching game” with the vocabulary words in bold
