July 2007

Current events and news are filled with environmental issues! It’s a hot topic!  There could not be a better time to be an ecology student with so many relevant issues surrounding us.  This class is not a slough class … this class is pertinent, thought provoking and will demand that you think beyond the surface of memorizing facts.

Get ready for lots of graphing, data analysing, discussing, news researching, journaling, group investigating, and case study analysis.

And blogging will definitely be in the mix! It’s here, on this blog site, that both of my ecology classes can connect, interact and spawn a respectful learning relationship as one large group.

So, be thinking of a good ecology blog name for yourself!  And, start watching for those ecology related headline news stories!

(Oh yea, we’ll have to throw in a few quizzes and tests every now an then, too!)  S.

This section on “quotes” will be for the students to read quotes from influential people on various science topics.  Reflection takes thoughtful time … thinking over the context of the quote … and then being able to artfully respond to what has been said, intimated and suggested by the author of the quote.

First (1) one must understand the general belief that is being expressed by the author, then one can (2) form and offer an opinion on the author’s expression of belief, giving a response that would intelligently offer one’s own 21st century perspective on the topic of the quote.    (PS - spelling and grammar count!  … especially now that you’ve entered the secondary levels of scientific thinking and discovery!)

Ms. Story’s biology 2007-2008 students must have for class:

1.   a “2 inch”  3-ring notebook  stocked with 50 sheets of college ruled paper

2.  a  8 x 10 graph notebook that is pre-three holed punched:  quad ruled of 4 squares per inch with approx. 100 pages.

3.  Good pencils are a must … lab reports must be done in pencil.

Do you know the language of biology?  Can you speak ”biologese?”  For starters, this is a major goal for biology students of 2007-2008.   Vocabulary, vocabulary, vocabulary … so many new words to fit with images and processes!  This opening unit introduces you to the beginning of your  bio-brain workouts that will rival anything you’ve done in the gym, on the track or in a video game.  It’s just the beginning before the real-deal extreme stuff starts comin’ at ya!  Take a deep breath … here we go!

Welcome to Ms. Story’s Connection to KFHS science students; future biologists, geneticists, biotechnicians, doctors, nurses, lab techs, DNA crime lab investigators, ecologists and future law-deciding citizens all.   click here to read your Blog Owner’s Manual
