Welcome back to another great year at Booker T. Washington Elementary! I am so excited to start another successful year! We currently have 21 students in our class! I have included a few links to items you might find helpful! If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to leave a comment and i will do my best to respond in a timely manner. I look forward to seeing you on Sept. 2, 2008!

Homework Board

Students in Ms. Howley’s class should bring homework home each night in Reading, Spelling, and Math. Science and Social Studies homework will be given as needed. However, your child should be reviewing their Interactive Notebooks each night in Science and Social Studies! I have also added a link to open the spelling words for this week. If you have any other ideas of what I can add to this section, feel free to let me know!
i apologize for not having the homeowrk board up to date! i have been having difficulty uploading the most recent document, for some reason. Until I can figure it out, I will just type the homework out below.
Monday:
Reading - Read the story Casey’s Tree House and Answer the questions that follow
Spelling - Write your words three times each
Math - Complete your in class assignment (either a place value chart or Accelerated Math Assignment
Tuesday:
Reading: Read and complete A Visit to the Shedd Aquarium
Spelling: Write/Use each spelling word in a sentence.
Math: PB pg. 4
Wednesday:
Reading - Read and complete A Visit to the Shedd Aquarium (cont.)
Spelling - Write your words in alphabetical order
Math - Homework worksheet 1.7 (place value)

d. Compare and Contrast
Comparing is telling how two people, places, or events are alike
Contrasting is telling how two people, places, or events are different
After reading a story have students compare and contrast different characters
3.3 Word Analysis
Short and long vowels
After reading a story have students go back and complete a short vowel/long vowel hunt, circle words that contain short/long vowels and sort them according to the vowel sound
Math
3.1 Place Value
Our class will begin the year learning Thousands, Ten Thousands, and Hundred Thousands. Students need to know how to write numbers up to the hundred thousands in standard (567,498), word (five hindred sixty-seven thousand, four hundred ninety-eight), and expanded (500,000 + 60,000 + 7,000 + 400 + 90 +8) form.

Have your students practice singing the rounding rhyme with motions for assistance with round

Science
3.2 Simple Machines
Students should be bringing their Interactive Notebooks home to review and study.
Social Studies
3.4 and 3.5 Map Skills
We are currently review the 7 continents, 4 oceans, the Equator, and Prime Meridian.
Soon students will work on identifying locations using cardinal (N, S, E, W) and Intermediate (NE, SE, SW, NW) directions and Grid Maps. We will begin identifying hemispheres next week.
Map Project for at home practice (JUST FOR FUN) Have your child create their own grid map using an old map from home or a map drawn of a familiar place. Have them create questions for you to answer using their grid maps.
