1)  Journal entry #6

2)  We discussed chapters 3 and 4 some and then took quiz LotF ch. 3-4.  Yes, it’s all writing…  Don’t neglect to attach your quote sheet from last class.

3)  You can have another day on Ch. 3 & 4 questions.

1)  Literary terms PPT slide number 4:  Define myth, satire, ballad, and romance.  List these on the same paper with the previous three sets…and turn them in!

2)  After some discussion of Simon’s allegorical significance as seen in his actions in chapter three, we (well, mostly I) read chapter 4, “Painted Faces and Long Hair” together.

3)  Chapter 3 and chapter 4 questions (LotF Ch. 4 study questions) are due on Monday/Tuesday when we take the quiz on chapters three and four.  Remember, the chapter three portion of the quiz will require you to synthesize the quotes that you found into a paragraph supporting the portrayal of Jack as being like an animal (these quotes may be direct or indirect characterizations of Jack.  (You’ll turn you quote sheet in as part of the quiz grade.)

For the chapter four portion of the quiz, you will write a “diary” entry from the perspective of either Ralph, Jack, or Piggy as might have (though wasn’t, since they didn’t have paper ;-) ) have been written the night after the missed ship/killed pig incident.  Really, as long as you understand the chapter, you nearly won’t be able to go wrong.  Make sure that the facts referenced from the conflict are accurate and that the emotions that your chosen character are logical… (and don’t use “texting” language)

 Have a great weekend!!

p.s.  First and fifth blocks will likely be extended on Monday due to the 11th grade English SOL test.

1)  Journal Entry #1:  For what reasons do you want to graduate from high school?

Everyone, please remember, the required length for each entry is twelve lines, then you will write a two page rough draft and edited final draft from one entry.  Let’s not blow this grade…again!  (OK?)

2)  I checked the Vocabulary 7 worksheet for completeness and we went over the answers.  So if you were absent, show it to me as soon as possible.  And if you didn’t have your worksheet when I checked them, you need to write a tenth grade caliber sentence with each word to redeem the grade.  The quiz is Friday 2/15 and Tuesday 2/19!

3)  We played a review game and then took our poetry terms quiz.

4)  Some bells completed GUM workbook page 221 on usage errors.  Ask a classmate (or me) to find out if this applies to you.

5)  Classwork/homework…um, I’m at home and I can’t remember the page number.  I’ll have to get back to you in the morning.  It was Language book page ____, rules ___ and ___, and Exercise 3.  Sorry…

6)  Please bring whatever you have typed up so far for your poetry project to class on Friday/Monday!  Presentations will be given and projects will be turned in on next Wednesday and Thursday; don’t let it slip up on you!  (Note:  These are the only two days on which presentations will be given.)

Poetry Project!  poetry-project-rubric.doc

This may be put together in as poster, a book, or a PowerPoint presentation.  (Just make sure I know before presentation day if you are doing a PowerPoint so that I can get a Smartboard.)  Presentations will be given and projects are due on February 13/14 (Wed./Thurs.).    Choose your poem/literary element from the literature textbook or show me any poem not in the textbook for approval.  Analyze it according to the format at the bottom of the “poetry terms” sheet.  Define and explain any literary elements present in the poem.  Research the poet and write (in your own words!!!!) at least three paragraphs about his or her life and/or inspiration in becoming a poet.  Make a correctly formatted works cited page/section (see Language p. 238) including all sources from which you gained information about the literary term and the poet.  Write an original (as in, you made it up yourself!) poem that is somehow inspired by the “famous” poem.  Be ready to present when called upon!  If you have questions, email me or post a comment on my webpage.

This Poet/Poem list lists all of the poems in the Literature book along with their pages and a poetic element that corresponds to the poem.  When analyzing the poem, be sure to address all of the elements listed on the poetry terms sheet you received a couple of weeks ago;  paraphrase it stanza by stanza, and discuss any literary devices used in the poem (rhyme, personification, imagery, similes, metaphors, et cetera!).  Don’t forget to include a definition of at least one of these terms.

As for your original poem, make it at least ten lines long (or if you’re doing haiku or tanka, write two or more) and in some way similar to the “famous” poem.  It might be similar in subject, tone, ryhme scheme, whatever…

Don’t forget to document the sources that you use to find information about the poet and poem.  And there shall be absolutely no “cut and paste” reports (or moving around of the words of others)…that’d be plagiarism!

Finally, I’m more than happy to help you interpret your poem.  Just let me know when we’re working on this during class, drop by after school, or shoot me a message…  I’m looking forward to some fabulous poems!

What inspires you?  1/7-8

Ok, you have written ten entries, now (as you did last quarter) you need to choose one entry to expand to two pages.  This will serve as your rough draft and the original entry as your prewrite.  Then, take the two page entry and proofread it and look for any way to improve it and make it sound more polished.  Clarify awkward sentences, check that subjects and verbs match, check spelling, add more specific details…etc!  This is your final paper.  Turn all of this in by Thursday or Friday January 17/18 (as is appropriate based on your class block, of course).  This is a test grade, guys!

Write about some aspect of 2007 that made it the best year of your life and something that made it the worst.  1/3-4/08

There is only one entry left…make sure you’re up to date and be thinking about which entry you would like to expand to two pages.  You’ll need a rough and final draft.

“Sigurd, the Dragon Slayer”  It’s a Norse myth; you’ll find it on page 675 in your literature textbook.

Also, please bring both textbooks to class so that we can have a book check

Please forgive me for not posting this yesterday, I think I had the post-holiday sleepies…

All blocks except for second (since so many students were on the Pruden Center field trip) will have a quiz on the myths and legends background material and on “Theseus” on Wednesday or Thursday 11/28-29.  Be prepared to explain the cultural value represented by two of Theseus’ deeds in paragraph form!

Presentations of each person’s illustration of one of Theseus’ deeds will be given prior to the quiz.  Let’s be prepared!

I decided to collect this (“Theseus” cloze) for a (classwork) grade after all.  Please be sure that you finished it and get it to me Monday or Tuesday (depending on which bell you’re in).  The story is on page 662 in the literature book.  Thanks!  Second and sixth block: you had to do this mostly for homework anyway due to our shortened bell today; don’t forget to bring it back!
