Poetry Project! poetry-project-rubric.doc
This may be put together in as poster, a book, or a PowerPoint presentation. (Just make sure I know before presentation day if you are doing a PowerPoint so that I can get a Smartboard.) Presentations will be given and projects are due on February 13/14 (Wed./Thurs.). Choose your poem/literary element from the literature textbook or show me any poem not in the textbook for approval. Analyze it according to the format at the bottom of the “poetry terms” sheet. Define and explain any literary elements present in the poem. Research the poet and write (in your own words!!!!) at least three paragraphs about his or her life and/or inspiration in becoming a poet. Make a correctly formatted works cited page/section (see Language p. 238) including all sources from which you gained information about the literary term and the poet. Write an original (as in, you made it up yourself!) poem that is somehow inspired by the “famous” poem. Be ready to present when called upon! If you have questions, email me or post a comment on my webpage.
This Poet/Poem list lists all of the poems in the Literature book along with their pages and a poetic element that corresponds to the poem. When analyzing the poem, be sure to address all of the elements listed on the poetry terms sheet you received a couple of weeks ago; paraphrase it stanza by stanza, and discuss any literary devices used in the poem (rhyme, personification, imagery, similes, metaphors, et cetera!). Don’t forget to include a definition of at least one of these terms.
As for your original poem, make it at least ten lines long (or if you’re doing haiku or tanka, write two or more) and in some way similar to the “famous” poem. It might be similar in subject, tone, ryhme scheme, whatever…
Don’t forget to document the sources that you use to find information about the poet and poem. And there shall be absolutely no “cut and paste” reports (or moving around of the words of others)…that’d be plagiarism!
Finally, I’m more than happy to help you interpret your poem. Just let me know when we’re working on this during class, drop by after school, or shoot me a message… I’m looking forward to some fabulous poems!
How many slides does the powerpoint have to be? parents want to know =/ lol.
Matt,
Be sure that the material is covered. Write your information out first and then divide it into sections that fit well onto slides. Sorry I don’t have a number for you…
Mrs. Weatherly
Okie Dokie.
In the poetry term rubric, what do you mean as “occasion?”
Think of the occasion of the poem like you would think of it for a party. If someone came over to your house and you were having a party, they might ask what the occasion was. You might respond that it is your birthday, or you might say that you just felt like having a party. In the same way, the occasion, or reason, that a poem is written might be something concrete such as a “the birth of a child,” etc. or it might be more ambiguous, such as “reflecting on growing old” or “admiring nature.”
I hope that helps! Good job getting this done!
Ok, one last question =) Will you be staying back tommorow?
Sure will…
I forgot to stay back, sorry. But anywho, i need help paraphrasing the poem “Sick” by Shel Silverstein, because its not in individual stanzas, and its rather hard to paraphrase something that is a run on type thing with all of the symptoms and what not.
I’m sorry, Matt, I wasn’t home for a while this evening and then had some chores to do…I don’t know if you’re still up, but I’ll look up the poem. Send me an email message if you’re still up…basically, take the poem “thought by thought” if you don’t have stanzas to use as clear breaks. Every line doesn’t have to be addressed, but each idea does. Ok?
Hey Mrs. Weatherly. um… i’m having problems with doing the poetry project, i’m really not sure what it is suppost to look like. I have board thing and everything. I’m just not exactly sure about what is suppost to be on this project and i’ve been wondering for the past couple of days here at my house. I’ve been really not feeling good at all seeing as how i got my wisdom teeth taken out and all, and i just really don’t understand what is suppost to be on the project, what it should look like, and everything else we have to do with it. Also, i do not understand about the “poem we make up ourselves”. I just do not want to show up at school with no project, get a bad grade because it’s late, and not even know what i was doing. So if you could just please comment me back that would be VERY HELPFUL =).
