I posted a site to the web with projects for 5th grade social studies standards covered during the 2nd 9 weeks (USI.5a-d through USI.6a-d). Some of the projects are not strictly computer based and students will need colored pencils, paper, and index cards for those projects (timelines, character trading cards, and victory posters).
Here is the link:

The link is also on my portal under 5th Grade>Social Studies - the link is called: US History Projects - Colonization through Revolution.

Step back in time and create a travel brochure for ancient Greece, ancient Rome, and the Mali Empire (SOLs 3.1 and 3.4)!
A template for the travel brochure with directions is provided along with a tutorial on using clipart to add/replace images in MS Word 2007. Students are directed to use their notes to complete the travel brochure, but links are provided for internet research to help them as well. There are links to online review quizzes/games for students who complete their projects early. Here is the link:

Would you like some Thanksgiving themed writing activities for Kindergarten through 5th grade? You would? I am so glad because I am getting ready to post some! In fact, here they are:
Kindergarten - this is a Word document tracer page. Students will trace the word “Thanksgiving” on the first line and then the second line just has the “Th” - they would have to try to write the rest of the word imitating the line above it. There are pictures at the bottom for them to color.
First Grade - this, too, is a tracer page. Students will trace “On Thanksgiving, my family” and then they will complete the sentence on their own. There is a blank space at the bottom for them to draw a picture.
2nd Grade - this one is a Power Point. It includes a writing assignment - a paragraph about their favorite Thanksgiving memory. Examples and a mini-lesson are included.
3rd Grade - this one is also a Power Point. It includes a writing assignment - an essay about their favorite Thanksgiving memory. Examples and a mini-lesson are included.
4th and 5th Grades - this is another Power Point. It has examples and a mini lesson for writing an essay about their favorite Thanksgiving memory.
Also, there is a really cool website (probably more appropriate for 5th grade) on the first Thanksgiving at:

Have a great, short week!

I know, I know….it’s barely Halloween and I’m talking about a December holiday already! I am taking a class right now and I put this unit together as my final project. It includes pre-reading, during reading, and post reading activities, templates for the projects, links to assist students, software tutorials, rubrics, and examples of student work. There is also a link to the full text of the novel. So, if anyone is teaching A Christmas Carol and could use a couple of ideas for activities, feel free to use anything I have here!

I posted a mini-review of continents, oceans, and some geography vocabulary (e.g. latitude, longitude, equator, prime meridian, compass rose, etc.), to the web. The review consists of multiple screens (the navigation icons are at the top of each screen) - some of the screens are strictly informational, and others are multiple choice assessment screens. The review course includes images and sound and is best viewed with a screen resolution of 1024 by 768 pixels. Here is the link:
