STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS

  • It is very likely that you will apply more time and effort than you have ever applied for a course, but YOU CAN DO IT!
    • Keep in mind that you are taking on a college-level Biology course, which is the equivalent of a first-year course for Biology majors.
    • It will require commitment and diligence and it is not unreasonable for you to plan to spend 5-10 hours a week outside of class on this course.
  • Pre-read the chapter before lecture begins.  This will familiarize you with new terms as they are used in the lecture.
  • Study EVERY DAY.
  • Study the chapters in sections.
    • Focusing on one section at a time will seem less overwhelming and will help you digest and retain the information better.
    • As you move on, continue going back to review what you’ve already covered.
    • Use the Powerpoint lectures and study guide to supplement.
  • Take advantage of online resources.  Use the Web Resources page.
  • Cramming for tests has never worked and never will.  Prepare early and often and get some sleep the night before a test.  Be the tortoise, not the hare: “Slow and steady wins the race.”
  • Ask questions.  See me after school if needed.
  • READ, READ, READ!!  And, then, read some more!  Ask me about additional resources available for loan.
  • REMEMBER THAT THE PURPOSE OF THIS COURSE IS TO PREPARE FOR THE AP EXAM.  Let’s get ready!!
