Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy New Year! We’re back to our regular schedule this week. Yes, there will homework and spelling words. 

Please note that we are collecting Boxtops for Education. You can send them in with your student to give to me.

After the end of the first semester, I will no longer be able to read the science and social studies benchmark tests to the students. Below is a link to our science book online with log in instructions. Click on the Grade 2 with audio book (A little microphone is on it.) and the site will read the selection aloud to your student as he/she reads to themselves.

User name: Suffolk (You have to capitalize the S.)

Important things to know about homework are:
• The homework sheet for the week, along with the spelling words, will be glued in your child’s agenda on Mondays.
• Please make sure your child reads TO you every night for 20 minutes. This is in addition to the 20 minute district homework policy. They can check out books on Monday during library. However, if they need a new one before then, they can visit the library between 9:00 and 9:20 AM.
• The spelling words are part of the reading skills for the week so please check that they are doing one menu item nightly and returning the assignment to school every day.
• I will send home a reading passage that your child needs to read to you nightly.

We will work on the following skills in Reading this week:
• Beginning, middle, and end in fiction
• compound words (multisyllabic words)

In Science this week, we will continue the unit on Seasonal Changes that we started last week. This includes learning about how animals adapt to protect themselves in the different seasons and how the land is affected by weather.

This week in Math the students will be reviewing everything we have done in math year in preparation for our 2nd math benchmark test on Friday. Some students are still struggling with adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers with “carrying” and “borrowing”. This is a very difficult skill for 2nd graders so any extra help that you can provide at home would be greatly appreciated!

In Social Studies we will learn about Rosa Parks this week.

Mrs. Cindy Martie
