Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have finally reached December which is always a busy month. We have started learning many new skills this 9 weeks so please take a moment to look at your student’s graded papers and discuss with them what they are doing right and what they are having issues with.

Please note that we are collecting Boxtops for Education. You can send them in with your student to give to me.

After the end of the first semester, I will no longer be able to read the science and social studies benchmark tests to the students. The log in information was sent in your email newsletter.

This week the students will continue to have homework. They will have homework Monday- Thursday unless otherwise noted. Important things to know about homework are:
• The homework sheet for the week, along with the spelling words, will be glued in your child’s agenda on Mondays.
• Please make sure your child reads TO you every night for 20 minutes. This is in addition to the 20 minute district homework policy. They can check out books on Monday during library. However, if they need a new one before then, they can visit the library between 9:00 and 9:20 AM.
• The spelling words are part of the reading skills for the week so please check that they are doing one menu item nightly and returning the assignment to school every day.
• I will send home a reading passage that your child needs to read to you nightly.

We will work on the following skills in Reading this week:
• review ask and answer questions
• words with the long e sound spelled with ee, ea, and y.
• review prefixes/suffixes and synonyms/antonyms

In Science this week, we will continue the unit on weather.
This week in Math the students will work adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers with “carrying” and “borrowing”. This is a very difficult skill for 2nd graders so any extra help that you can provide at home would be greatly appreciated!

In Social Studies we will continue the unit on Economics.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Cindy Martie
