Newsletter week of 10-1-18

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy first week of October! I am hoping the weather will finally start cooling down a bit.

Please note that we are collecting Boxtops for Education. You can send them in with your student to give to me.

This week the students will continue to have homework. They will have homework Monday- Thursday unless otherwise noted. Important things to know about homework are:
• The homework sheet for the week, along with the spelling words, will be glued in your child’s agenda on Mondays.
• Please make sure your child reads TO you every night for 20 minutes. This is not included as part of the 20 minute district homework policy. They can check out books on Monday during library. However, if they need a new one before then, they can visit the library between 9:00 and 9:20 AM.
• The spelling words are part of the reading skills for the week so please check that they are doing one menu item nightly and returning the assignment to school every day.
• I will send home a reading passage that your child needs to read to you nightly.

We will work on the following skills in Reading this nine weeks:
• Use consonants, consonant blends, and consonant digraphs to decode words.
• Use knowledge of short, long, and r-controlled vowel patterns to decode and spell words.
• Use information in the story to read words.
• Use knowledge of sentence structure.
• Use knowledge of story structure and sequence.
• Reread and self-correct
• Use vocabulary from other content areas.
• Ask and answer questions about what is read in fiction and nonfiction.
• Locate information to answer questions.
• Describe characters, setting, and important events in fiction and poetry.
• Identify main idea in fiction and nonfiction.
• Summarize stories and events with beginning middle, and end in the correct sequence.
• Draw conclusions based on text.

In Science this week, we will practice the Scientific Method, learn about tools that scientists use, and begin our unit on matter.

This week in Math the students will work on addition, subtraction, inverse relationships, and fact families and in Social Studies the students will explore city, state, and national government and diversity. There will be a test over this on Friday. Study guide will be in agenda on Monday.

We are keeping very busy following the district pacing guide. I am looking forward to working with all of you this year and I want to thank you in advance for sharing your student with me.
