Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy Fall. This week we will begin or normal reading routine with the students being placed in their leveled groups.  I am sending home a permission slip that needs to be signed in order for your student can go on the Farm Day Field Trip.   The chaperones will be school teachers and staff.

Please check that your student is doing their homework.

Important things to know about homework are:

  • The homework sheet for the week, along with the spelling words, will be glued in your child’s agenda on Mondays.
  • Please make sure your child reads TO you every night. They can check out books on Monday during library. However, if they need a new one before then, they can go before school.
  • The spelling words are part of the reading skills for that week so please check that they are doing one menu item nightly and returning the assignment to school every day.
  •  I will send home a reading passage that your child needs to read to you nightly. There is 1 question to answer per day. Please sign and return these to me on Friday.

We will work on the following skills in Reading this nine weeks:

  • Use consonants, consonant blends, and consonant digraphs to decode words.
  • Use knowledge of short, long, and r-controlled vowel patterns to decode and spell words.
  • Use information in the story to read words.
  • Use knowledge of sentence structure.
  • Use knowledge of story structure and sequence.
  • Reread and self-correct
  • Use vocabulary from other content areas.
  • Ask and answer questions about what is read in fiction and nonfiction.
  • Locate information to answer questions.
  • Describe characters, setting, and important events in fiction and poetry.
  • Identify main idea in fiction and nonfiction.
  • Summarize stories and events with beginning middle, and end in the correct sequence.
  • Draw conclusions based on text.

In Science this week, we will continue learning about magnets. Thhis week in Math the students will begin learning to round to the nearest 10 I teach them to use a number line as a strategy to complete these types of problems.  In Social Studies the students will review for the test on Friday over diversity/government.

We are mandated by Ms. Bryant to take strategy grades in math and reading.  Strategies are “tricks” that I teach them with their skills in reading/math.  I observe when they are doing their assignment whether or not they are using them.  This came about because the SOL test grade teachers were noticing students rushing through their state tests and not using any of their strategies.  They then would not pass the state tests which affects our school certification with the state.  Chances are if the students are using their “tricks” to help them read/comprehend/solve problems, they will pass the test.Â

If you have not signed up for Parent Connect I suggest that you do so. This program allows you to view your child’s grades online. Please keep in mind that I do not put grades in every day.  I usually take grades/enter grades at the end of the week after we’ve covered each topic all week.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cindy Martie
