Kids Rules for Internet Safety
- I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents’ work address/telephone number, or the name and location of my school without my parents’ permission.
- I will tell my parents right away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable.
- I will never agree to get together with someone I “meet” online without first checking with my parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring my mother or father along.
- I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents.
- I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. If I do I will tell my parents right away so that they can contact the service provider.
- I will talk with my parents so that we can set up rules for going online. We will decide upon the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online and appropriate areas for me to visit. I will not access other areas or break these rules without their permission.
- I will not give out my Internet password to anyone (even my best friends) other than my parents.
- I will check with my parents before downloading or installing software or doing anything that could possibly hurt our computer or jeopardize my family’s privacy
- I will be a good online citizen and not do anything that hurts other people or is against the law.
- I will help my parents understand how to have fun and learn things online and teach them things about the Internet, computers and other technology.

Hey there Techies!
We had the big What is Technology? and Problem Solving class the last couple of days. Very simply, Technology is using what we know, what we can do, and the stuff around us to solve problems and make people better! (The definition that I want you to know is below.)
Bell Ringer - What do you think technology is?
Question of the day - What do you expect from this class?
The key words of the day:
- study
- application
- knowledge
- creativity
- resources
- solve
- problems
- extend
- human
- potential
Be ready for a review of the definition (The application of knowledge, creativity, and resources to solve problems and exten human potential.) and a history lesson during your next class!
Now you have had a small taste of problem solving in Tech Ed! Can you imagine all of the ways that you can use IDEATE for the rest of your life?
A quick refresher…
- Identify the problem
- Define the goal
- Explore possible solutions
- Assess the alternatives
- Take action
- Evaluate the outcome
An example…
- I - I need to teach my 6th grade technology students the problem solving method IDEATE, that is used in Technology Education
- D - The 6th grade technology students need to be able to use the problem solving method to solve real problems
- E - Ways that I might teach problem solving…
- Lecture
- Write info on board
- Have students take notes
- Give examples
- Solve a problem together as a class
- Solve a problem in small groups
- Solve a problem with a partner
- Each student solve a problem on their own
- A - What makes these possible solutions good or bad?
- Lecture - not everyone learns well by lecture
- Write info on board - some explanation is needed
- Have students take notes - helps the visual learners
- Give examples/demonstrations - will help more students by seeing the system used
- Solve a problem together as a class - I will be able to give them guidance and help them avoid huge mistakes
- Solve a problem in small groups - working together will give a number of students to help support each other in the activity
- Solve a problem with a partner - two students will still have the opportunity to help and support each other
- Each student solve a problem on their own - gives the student the chance to do problem solving all by themselves.
- All of the ideas for possible solutions are good when used together
- T - I will teach the lessons on problem solving using the solutions listed above
- E - My final evaluation will be a test to see if the students can display the use of the problem solving system - IDEATE
WOW! That’s a lot of great stuff! Don’t worry - we are not done going over this and practicing the use of IDEATE! We still have sixteen weeks of class left! And believe me, we need every bit of it!!!
Hope this doesn’t strain the brain too much! Rest up for the next few days because we will be problem solving!
Mrs. Shapiro
PS - For those who missed the notes or activities for this here they are on a worksheet!

Problem Solving - 9 Dots
Problem Solving 12 Dots

Intro Students: I have had the chance to look at some of your new inventions - not all of them yet - and I must say you all have some pretty cool and interesting ideas! Just think, someday you might be the guy or girl to turn those ideas into the real thing! That would be AWESOME!
I hope you do!
The key words of the day:
- study
- application
- knowledge
- creativity
- resources
- solve
- problems
- extend
- human
- potential
Be ready for a review of the definition and a history lesson during your next class!

Okay Techies!
We have tackled problem solving pretty well! You learned how to connect dots, make 9, build towers out of paper, and cut gigantic holes in paper! But most important you have gained some problem solving skills and have become thinkers!
6th graders - we’re going to be moving on to our resources and systems - get ready for some new stuff in technology that you probably already know! (hey - there’s that knowledge again!) Believe me, we are going to apply your knowledge and creativity a lot in the next few days!
7th and 8th graders - since the modules are not up and running yet we are going to start doing some other activities to cover the objectives that are required of us! Wanna race? How about a production project? Or maybe we can do some construction! I’ve got some great ideas up my sleeve!
Have a great weekend! We’re going to hit things hard next week! Bring a container - I’ve got knowledge to share!
