Practice Record

Sept. 11 - Played through first page of book on both mallets and snare with the cd.  Tuned drums, addressed snare tensioners, talked about how to tune opposite sides in a star pattern.  Reminded all of practice records.

Sept. 15 - Turned in practice records. Mallets need to practice first five pages, Snare can start on page 6.  Work on rebounds, paradiddles, alternate sticking on mallets, double sticking on mallets. Quiz on Friday on Mallet number 13, snare number 19.

Sept. 17 - Warmup on mallet number 13. quiz on 13 on Friday. Work on page 6 and 7 for mallets. work on 7-A for snare.  Especially buzz rolls.

Sept. 19 - had mallet quiz.  When practicing mallets, bring one stick out of the way to make room for the opposite stick.  If you imagine the mallets as bouncing balls, bouncing around the keyboard without any sticks or hands holding them, that’s the idea that you want to portray.  Worked on multiple bounce rolls on snare.  Skipped to 21.  Make sure palms are down and the flat part of the thumbs are pressing the stick into the hook formed by your index finger.  Keep all middle, ring and pinky fingers out of the equation for now.  As many bounces as you can get the stick to do.  Let the stick do the work.  You’re just “dribbling” the stick.  It bounces up on its own.  Practice records due next Tuesday.

Sept. 23 - Worked on alternate sticking for bells using 13 and 14.  Introduced page 40, numbers 1through 4 on mallets. Focused on rebounds and grip on snare.  Test on mallets #14 on Thursday and 8 on a hand rebounds on snare.  Please use your own paper for practice records, as there are no more copies in the school.

Sept. 29 - Mallets: reviewed 14, practice page 6 and 7.  Don’t forget page 40.  Snare, definitely practice page 40.  Sticking and Accents are important.  Break down our roll rudiments into sixteenth notes first.

Oct. 1 - Practiced page 40 on snare and mallets, worked on numbers 14, 15.  Played Echoes of Kyoto.
