6th Grade Percussion

Nov. 17 - Practiced 79, 68 on Bells.  Allowed Bishop and Teniya to play drums because they knew their bell parts.  Reviewed diagramming Time Signatures.

Nov. 12 - Set up bells.  Do not play.  Recite note names for 38, 39, 78, 79.  We will warm up on scales.  did time Signature exercises.  worked on 38 and 39.

Nov. 7 - worked with a metronome using quarter notes, eighth notes and some sixteenths.  Nov. 5 - 2nd 9 weeks begins.  Practiced bell parts to number 25.  Went over note divisions to set up for time signature lesson

Oct. 29 - Practiced Scales up to C Major.  Talked about District Band Auditions.  Learned first 8 measures of number 78 in th book.  Up on the Housetop.  Talked about first and second endings, repeat sign.  Talked also about routine.

Oct. 23 - Worked on 8 on a hand, checked grips, drum heights, body proximity to drum.  Played page 7-A, worked on Multiple Bounce Rolls.  Talked about note division compared to the whole note.

Oct. 15 - Reviewed scales from Oct. 13.  Practiced scales and talked about the test on Friday.  Also played through the first several pages of the book on bells.  Next day will be snare.

How to Obtain a Band Instrument

Sept. 3 - Students were issued folders and a Parent Information Sheet that parents should fill out and return by Sept. 5.  Went over expectations in class.

Sept. 5 - Went over note time divisions down to the eighth note.  Had an assembly.

Sept. 9 - Took apart a snare drum, learned all the parts, went over proper grip, traditional and matched.  Students tried grip, and others tried rebounds. Sent home paper form How to Obtain a Band Instrument.  You can download this using the link above.

Sept. 15 - Took notes on time division, stems, flags, beam rules.  Reminded of rental meeting.

Sept. 17 - Introduced students to all percussion instruments and reviewed note and time divisions.  Let some kids play snare and bass.

Sept. 23 - Played mallets and Snare up to number 10.  Students will have a quiz on number 10 on thursday.  Students should be ready to play using correct sticking, grip, posture, drum height, good rebounds.

Sept. 25 - played mallets up to number 12.  tuned snares.

Oct. 1 - Worked mostly on mallets and sticking number 12.  Put together marimba.  Cleaned up.
