March 31: Even Day

7th Grade: Students will take assigned music and review note names and counting patterns. Students will be able to count and clap rhythms, then play with one hand, the melody in perfect time. We got to the first line in the bass part. Students need to apply what we learned to their own assigned part.  All students should have counting and note names written in.

8th Grade: Students will work on percussion ensemble piece and be able to play proficiently. Target performance: Friday during one of the lunches

6th Grade: Students will receive a piece of sheet music to be studied and performed at the next concert. Students must have their own folder and will be assigned a specific piece. Students must take care of their music to be passed back at the end of the year.

I’ve just gotten around to updating this website.  Things have been pretty hectic, what with the recent preparation for District Festival which happened on March 7.  The kids played some challenging music and really have come a long way as to understanding what’s expected of them.  I’m proud of the work that we’ve done, and have a clearer vision for what we need to do in the future to get better.

March is Music in our Schools Month.  Students, in addition to their band music, should be working on trios to play during the lunches this week.

Select students will be involved in All-City Band on April 18 and 19
Next Full Band concert is: May 13

It’s now time to really examine if your instrument needs repairs or if you need supplies such as reeds, oil, etc.  Do you have the appropriate book for the class? Below are music stores in the area.

Band Club (Tuesdays, Thursdays) (Put on hiatus for now, as Hugo organizes the year.)

Requirements for Band Club:

  • Extreme desire to go above and beyond what is required and a thirst for learning everything they can about music.
  • Ability to come to school early Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:00 am to rehearse until 7:45.
  • Grade point average above a 2.5.
  • Mature, and in good standing with all teachers, including Mr. Hugo.

Activities will include community service concerts, lunch time concerts, learning above and beyond what’s required in class about music.

Festival Band (completed)

We are going to take a select group of musicians to District Festival on March 6.  This will be comprised of the most dedicated student musicians from the 8th grade and the 7th grade.

Students going to Festival must participate in the afterschool rehearsals on the following dates: January 30, 2/4, 2/6, 2/11, 2/13, 2/20, 2/25, 2/27, 3/3, 3/5.  Practices will end promptly at 4:00 on the above dates, and parents must pick their children up at that time, or arrange for rides.

We’ll give a “Pre-Festival” concert on March 5 as a final practice before our big day on March 6.
