The student will be able to locate Egypt on the continent of Africa.

 

 

Contributions of Ancient Egypt

Written Language

Hieroglyphics – ancient Egyptian picture writing

Inventions:

  • Paper – made from a grass called papyrus that grew in the Nile River
  • 365 day calendar – follows the cycle of the sun, each month had 30 days and every week had 10 days.  The gods were honored with sacrifices and celebrations on the remaining 5 days
  • Clock
  • Mathematics

Architecture 

Pyramids – to protect the pharaoh: (king) after his death

 Climate

Hot, dry

Land

  • Nile River
  • Deserts – Sahara Desert
  • Flooding – river floods each year in July and goes back down in October, the flooding leaves a coating of rich soil behind

 Plant Life

Grasses along the Nile River

Climate: the kind of weather an area has over a long period of time.  (hot,dry)

Land:  the shape of the land’s surface (Nile River, Deserts, Flooding)

Environment: surroundings

How Egyptians adapted to their environment:  they farmed and irrigated the land near the Nile River.
