Band & Orchestra Notebook Requirements
All students in the instrumental music program at Nansemond River are required to maintain a notebook. The notebook should be a 1″, 3-ring binder with at least 10 document protectors to start. It is important for students to keep track of the material issued in music classes. Senior musicians will be required to submit a portfolio before graduation. If you maintain all of the material that you will recieve as my student you will be prepared to complete your 9 weeks test assigmnent. As a personal bonus, you will be prepared for college life if you choose to attend college and continue the study of music.
BAND & ORCHESTRA NOTEBOOK REQUIREMENTS
1st year student contents
· Course Outline (posted on school website)
· 5 main ingredients for a successful music performance
· Notes on the counting system
· A note tree
· Practice log(s)
· Quizzes, tests, homework and class assignments from 1st and 2nd 9 week period.
· Vocabulary words and correct definitions
· extra document protectors
2nd Year student contents
- Course Outline (posted on school website)
- 5 main ingredients for a successful music performance
- Note tree
- A copy of a program or a list of music you performed for the Harvest Concert and / or Winter Concert.
- A copy of the All District band prepared music (band students only)
- A copy of the student requirements for Regional Orchestra and music ( Orchestra students only)
- Copies of any music that you have practiced on your own time with the section marked in pencil.
- ***Points will be deducted for having original and / or abused copies of music in your notebook.
· Circle of 5ths
· Quizzes, tests, homework and class assignments from 1st and 2nd 9 week period.

3rd year student contents

Senior Musician’s Portfolio (seniors are required to turn in a portfolio during the 4th 9 week marking period. ALL MUSIC WITH A COPYRIGHT MARKED “PROPERTY OF NRHS BANDS” MUST BE REMOVED FROM YOUR NOTEBOOK BEFORE YOU TURN IT IN FOR GRADING. ALL COPIES OF MUSIC MUST BE TURNED IN TO MR WOODIS BEFORE GRADUATION. Your portfolio will be in a 1” 3 ring binder with no less than 25 entries from the above 4 years of student content. See the rubric for the Senior Portfolio requirements. Portfolio Assessment
(105) A + = The cover of the portfolio is clearly marked with the students name and class. It may be personalized with pictures related to music or the students instrument The 25 page portfolio demonstrates excellent musicianship skills as characterized by the students performance including effective organization by year of study, sample programs with list students performing repertoire, practice material, audition requirements and personal student works. The content work is neat and protected with document protectors. The student’s handwriting is neat and legible with markings on the music in pencil. Portfolio contains samples of class work, homework, quizzes, tests and other teacher and self assessments. The portfolio contains verifiable work from the students experience with a private instructor. The student has a copy of the mission and vision statement for the music program at NRHS with clear progress towards accomplishing the mission.

- 4 pts / pg = The 25 page portfolio demonstrates good musicianship development including effective organization by content year of study. Notebook contains strong evidence (1-5 pgs) of class participation (class work, homework, quizzes, tests, practice samples). The content is neat and no more than 3 pages are without document protectors. Notebook contains the mission and vision statement for the program with 3 out of 4 course outlines.

- 3 pts / pg = The 20-25 page portfolio demonstrates above average musicianship development. Notebook contains evidence of class participation (class work, homework, quizzes, tests, practice samples). The content is neat 4-8 pages are without document protectors. All of the contents of the notebook are from the requirements.

- 2 pts / pg = The 15-20 page portfolio demonstrates average musicianship development. All pages are from the notebook requirements for student content. The entries are neat and well kept with no more than 10 pgs without document protectors.
1 pt / pg = The 10 -15 pg portfolio may be flawed with little evidence of class participation. There are pages that are not listed in the student requirements for notebooks in the instrumental music program. The notebook contains copies of music with a copyright marked with ink. The music is torn or original copies of music are in the notebook. The outer cover is torn, abused and / or neglected.
