This week- January 5-9, 2009

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope your break was restful and fun…now, GET BACK TO WORK!

This week we’re continuing with patterns (SOL 6.21), by looking at key terms and numerical and geometric patterns. Wednesday’s mock writing test will shorten classes, but we will begin SOL 6.22 hopefully that day and continue on until next Wednesday, January 14th.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Quiz on SOL 6.21 and 6.22 will be Wednesday, January 14th.

Vocabulary TEST will be given the week of January 20th (after the King day holiday).

The 2nd 9 weeks test will be the week of January 20th as well!

Last day of the “year”!

mod-formats1Good morning everyone!

Yesterday, we began to learn about numerical and geometric patterns and sequences…SOL 6.21.  We actually began this a week ago during our morning work.  We learned yesterday how to create numerical and geometric patterns using grid paper- performing transformations with pre-made patterns, kind of like using a tile to create a design on a floor, but the floor being a sheet of grid paper! We’re going to continue today, and hopefully start adding color to our patterns!  Below you will find some information about patterns, new vocab, and the objectives for this SOL.

Note- any student who completes a MOD can bring it to school in January and I will laminate it for you!

Note again- Don’t use crayon! It will melt in the laminator!

SOL 6.21

Patterns and Sequences

In this SOL, I will:

1.       Extend numerical and geometric patterns and sequences

2.       Find common differences and ratios in patterns

3.       Use vocabulary to describe patterns

New VOCAB:

Common Difference *

Reflection (FLIP)*

Rotation (TURN)*

Translation (SLIDE)*

Dilation

Geometric Pattern*

Arithmetic Sequence

Triangular Number

Consecutive

Square Number

MOD Instructions (just in case):

1.       Know the MOD! (block 1- Base 5; block 2-3- Base 4)

2.       Think of where you’d like to place your first MOD on your grid sheet.

3.       Lightly pencil in your MOD numbers.

4.       Flip, turn, and slide you MOD the way you want!

5.       Make a color key , and test it in your notebook first to see if you like it.

6.       Color your MOD (color by number).

This week…December 15-19

Hey everyone!

This week, we have been working hard on probabilities, tree diagrams, and using fun games like SKUNK and Rock, Paper, and Scissors to emphasize them! It has been fun, and today’s quiz on this topic should go very well.  We have had some homework in this SOL unit:

Pg 430

Pg 435

We will wrap up the calendar year by beginning SOL 6.21, numerical and geometric sequences, by working on a cool activity we call “Mod Math”.  It uses geometric patterns created by students to make a laminated pattern sheet that looks  GREAT on the fridge! It emphasizes geometric transformations like flips (reflection), turns (rotation), and slides (translations).  Students can complete it at home during the break, and bring it back to be laminated in January.

Please remember to bring in tissues and hand sanitizer when you return!

Happy Holidays!

TEST DAY!

Good afternoon!

Today is Midpoint Test Day.  Each class has been working extra hard on both sections of the test, making sure to read each question carefully, checking their work and marking the correct answer.  Do you know why teachers like test day?

It’s QUIET!

Any absent students–Upon your return, you will take the Test.  If you have been absent for a week or more prior to the test, please see me so we can make proper arrangements for review before the test.

Homework- Your paper is due to me by FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12th. Each day late…10 points deducted!

Homework for Wednesday, December 10th- Make corrections to the word problem sheet given back in class. Corrections (and signatures for grades less than 70) due to me by FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12th.

Only 8 more school days left until break!

Tomorrow is TEST DAY!

Good morning everyone!

Remember…tomorrow (Tuesday, December 9th) you will take your 2nd 9 weeks MIDPOINT TEST.  Please see below for the topics you may see on the test. Have you reviewed your notes? Have you looked over your homework assignments, or the list of word problem strategies given to you a few weeks ago, or the list you wrote in class today (monday)?  ARE YOU READY!?

Mr. K’s WISH LIST (things needed for class in the next few days or weeks):

HAND SANITIZER

TISSUES

Smarties candies

Skittles candies (fun size, in the little bags)

(5 classwork points for each item brought in)

Friday Update!

Hey everyone!

This week, we worked on a vocabulary quiz (corrections were due TODAY!),  and we’ve been reviewing for the Midpoint Test, which will be given on Tuesday, December 9th.  Are you ready?! Below you will find the topics you should expect to see on the test (review your notes/text!):

SOL 6.4- Comparing and ordering fractions, whole numbers, and decimals (page 198 and 108 in text)

SOL 6.5 - Integers (graphing, identifying, understanding opposites) (page 294)

SOL 6.6a- Fraction Operations (chapter 6 and 7)

SOL 6.6b- Division of Decimals (pages 144 and 152)

SOL 6.7 and 6.8- Estimation and Consumer math word problems (see page VA3 for word problem examples, as well as the blue section in the back of the book, which is just word problems!)

REMINDER- YOUR FORMAL WRITING IS DUE DECEMBER 12th!  Your “Goldilocks and the 3 Bears” writing, including the prewrite, rough draft with revisions, and your RUBRIC are due to me, stapled together, by next Friday.

Mr. K’s…gone today!

Students-

Due to illness, I will not be in class today (Wednesday). In my absence, you will find tons and tons of work, and you will be observed by Mrs. Folden. As many of you know, Mrs. Folden is about a zillion years old, making her very cranky and mean. Do not make her mad.

Please remember that you have a formal writing due on the 12th of December (some of you will receive the formal writing sheet in class Wednesday).  Do not lose it- it is worth 10 points!

You have a vocab quiz Wednesday. Did you study?

Any parents (HI!) that are still interested in coming to the Parents Involved in Education (PIE) event on December 10th, please complete the form sent home with your child (if you do not have one, call the office and speak to Mrs. Weaver for details)…I will be presenting some math take-home strategies, so come on up and have a piece of PIE!

REMEDIATION DAY CHANGE!

Ladies, gentlemen, students, etc.:

Due to required meetings I will need to change the Thursday remediation day to this TUESDAY, DECEMBER 2ND.  Parents- if you would like your student to attend, please be here no later than 3:30pm to pick up your child.  Thanks- my apologies for the necessary change in schedule!

No homework today…but remember, there will be a vocabulary quiz on WEDNESDAY- see the terms on the word wall!

The restaurant/mall simulation project will end on Tuesday, when we will balance checkbooks, double-check calculations, and turn in all work…for a QUIZ GRADE!

Reminder About Restaurant Project!

Remember…your restaurant/mall simulation activity will be on Monday, December 1st.  YOU MUST HAVE YOUR RESTAURANT MENU AND ANY OTHER MATERIALS READY WHEN YOU COME TO SCHOOL THAT DAY! You will not have time to finish materials in class.  You will receive your (fake) debit card and your new checkbook register sheet on that day, as well as any other sheets necessary to complete the activity.

On Tuesday, all materials and sheets from the project are due to me. They will be stapled together, and will count as a QUIZ GRADE.  Missing sheets will mean point deductions!

On Wednesday, your vocab quiz will be taken on the terms below:

Estimate, Rounding, Budget, Compare, Contrast, Multi-step, Solution, Describe, Installment, Down Payment

The only homework this week was the Word Problem Sheet (choose 6)…did you do it?

Happy Turkey Day!

RESTAURANT PROJECT!

Good morning!

Today we discussed the objectives of our newest project, incorporating consumer math and word problems.  Groups of 3 students will be planning their own restaurant, from the theme, to the menu, to the menu prices!  Students will construct an actual menu to be used during the final project day, when they will visit Mrs. Folden’s “mall” and purchase items with their “debit card”.  All purchases will be documented and deducted from their account, and all supporting papers will be submitted as a QUIZ GRADE.   See below for a list of required items for the quiz grade:

  1. Menu
  2. Check Register (from last week’s activity)
  3. Your Debit Card (from mall simulation)
  4. Dinner Purchase Sheet
  5. Mall Purchase Sheet(s)
  6. Restaurant Sales Sheet

If you have creative materials that you’d like to use to construct your menu, feel free to bring them in. You are responsible for your belongings!  I have some paper, glue, scissors, colored pencils, etc. in class, and I will get more varied materials for this part of the project.  First come, first served!

Mall Simulation Day- Monday, December 1st (which means you MUST have your menu done before Monday!)

Project Materials Due- Tuesday, December 2nd (you can work on finalizing calculations that day)

Counts as a- QUIZ GRADE!

Research suggestions:

  1. Look at the menu when you go to a restaurant!
  2. Look at restaurant websites for food ideas, price ideas, or themes
  3. Ask your parents/families!
  4. Ask for a menu from a local restaurant (and try to return it when you’re finished!)
  5. Make your prices REASONABLE (nobody wants to buy a $50,000 hamburger!)
